The most adversity that the Skaneateles girls lacrosse team had to deal with early in the Section III Class C playoffs had little to do with the game itself.

Rain and lightning swooped down on Hyatt Stadium Tuesday night, keeping the top-seeded Lakers from even starting its quarterfinal game against no. 9 seed General Brown.

So they tried again on Wednesday afternoon, and Skaneateles managed to play just the game it wanted, potent on the attack and stingy on the defensive side, as it cruised to a 17-6 victory over the Lions.

Skaneateles had seen how General Brown had managed to outscore Cazenovia 16-15 in the opening round on May 18, which showed how potent the Lions could be – but also demonstrated how vulnerable it was in the back.

So the Lakers spent the first half controlling the draws and attacking at will, overwhelming GB’s defenders and steadily working its way to a 10-2 halftime advantage.

Though the pace slowed a bit in the second half, Skaneateles still built the margin to double digits as, by game’s end, nine different players had scored, led by Emma Ford, who had four goals, and eighth-grader Kyla Sears, who earned three goals and one assist.

Hannah Powers, Alana Navaroli and Hannah Logan each found the net twice, while Molly Wood, Casey VanSlyke, Sophie Gorman and Nicole Beatson earned one goal apiece.

Wood and Molly Newton gained single assists. Three Lions players – Emily Amell, Cayla O’Connor and Hannah Peebles – scored twice, accounting for all of GB’s production.

In Friday night’s Class C semifinal at Liverpool High School Stadium, Skaneateles faces o. 4 seed LaFayette, who is in this round for the first time in program history. Game time is 7 p.m.

The winner here gets Marcellus or South Jefferson (who meet in the first semifinal on Friday) in next Tuesday’s sectional final at the Carrier Dome.
