CENTRAL NEW YORK – After winning its opener against Canastota on Dec. 1, the Cazenovia wrestling team went to the Morrisville-Eaton Duals two days later and won two of its five matches.
A narrow 37-28 defeat to Vernon-Verona-Sherrill started the day for the Lakers, who then fell 45-27 to the host M-E Warriors before beating Whitesboro 33-24.
The remaining two matches were split, Cazenovia edging East Syracuse Minoa 42-36, but losing 70-6 to Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA, who claimed the team title with a 5-0 sweep.
Individually, Broden Enders and John Fowler both went 4-1 for the Lakers. Sticking to 145 pounds, Enders pinned three foes in the first period and added a 6-2 decision over Whitesboro’s Derek Marrero.
As for Fowler, he bounced between 172 and 189 pounds, winning all three of his bouts at 189, the closest of them a 3-2 battle with M-E’s Cameron Winn as the others were pins.
Back at Buckley Gym last Tuesday night, Cazenovia faced Homer, who returns two state Division II champions from 2021-22, Talan Hubbard and Sam Sorenson.
Neither Hubbard nor Sorenson wrestled here, taking forfeits, and the Lakers only had three mat victories in a 54-21 defeat to the Trojans.
Before Broden Enders pinned Dan Hardesty in 42 seconds at 152 pounds, Bryce Enders wrestled at 145, pulling out a 5-3 win over Lukas Quinn.
Fowler’s 97-second pin over Jameson Swab at 172 was the only other mat victory, with Cullen Arnold, at 118 pounds, claiming a forfeit.
Chittenango took on Marcellus Thursday night and lost 41-30 to the Mustangs.
Andrew Bailey’s 45-second pin of Vasyl Prokopchuk at 215 pounds got the Bears on the board, with Jacob Ezzo, at 285 pounds, pinning Cade LaFleur in the second period.
A forfeit to Dan Mahle at 110 pounds got Chittenango in front, but Marcellus won the next four bouts before Wesley Chandler (145) and Edward Geer (152) got second-period falls over, respectively, Charles Orr and Anthony DeCapio.
As for Cazenovia, it again went 2-3 during last Saturday’s Brett Dixon Memorial Duals at Central Square. Though handling Syracuse City 39-12 and Rome Free Academy 57-6, the Lakers fell 37-28 to Jordan-Elbridge and 39-33 to East Syracuse Minoa and took a 50-24 defeat to the hosts from Central Square.
Evan Rutecki won both of his contested bouts at 118 and 126, with Fowler going 3-1 at 172 equaling the records of both Broden and Bryce Enders. Finn Tobin had a 2-2 mark at 160 pounds.
Chittenango went 1-4 in the Valley Duals at Central Valley Academy, its lone win a 31-27 decision over Little Falls as it fell 60-12 to CBA, 63-12 to Gouverneur, 51-18 to West Genesee and 42-36 to Mount Markham.
