CENTRAL NEW YORK – Having tied Baldwinsville and claimed the sixth-player tie-breaker when they met in the first week of September, the West Genesee Gold boys golf team had a chance to reach the top of the SCAC Metro division standings.
Doing so required the Wildcats to beat Cicero-North Syracuse Blue when they met last Tuesday afternoon at Westvale Golf Club, but the Northstars would prevail by a 189-208 margin.
Ryan Till shot a 40 for nine holes, one ahead of Eric Korzeniewski’s 41, with Max Lauricella and Owen Zoanetti each getting a 42 and Joe Snyder a 43. But C-NS Blue swept the top four, each of them breaking 40 as Sam Thompson led with a 36 ahead of Sean Lawler (37), Jack Wolanski and Devin Kellogg (38 each).
Then WG lost 203-211 to Fayetteville-Manilus White last Friday. Ben Glass shot a 39 and Lauricella had a 40, but four different Hornets shot those same scores and no other Wildcat topped 44, which Till, Cameron Hovater and Tyler Anastasio produced.
Winless in three previous matches, West Genesee Blue knocked off Liverpool 210-213 last Thursday at Westvale.
Though Dominick Osbeck and Owen Michaud each shot 39 for the Warriors, WG Blue had the next five best totals. Jason Clifton shot 41, with Max DeMass adding a 43. Lincoln Christopher and Brady Smith both had 44s and Ashton Fassinger clinched it with a 46.
Skaneateles began its week on a strong note by going to Rogues Roost last Monday and defeating Chittenango 211-225.
Shawn Luce and Jack Marquardt each had a 39, two shots behind the Bears’ Alex Moesch and matching Tyrus Kelly, and the Lakers pulled away behind a 40 from Tyson DiRubbo, a 45 from Will Cowden and a 48 from Henry Major.
A narrow 216-220 defeat to Cazenovia followed a day later. Shooting 38 at Cazenovia Country Club, Luce and Marquardt tied Cazenovia’s Jack Byrnes for top honors, with DiRubbo adding a 44, but all five of the hosts’ top players shot 47 or lower.
Back in action on Thursday, Skaneateles shot 218 to sweep LaFayette (262) and Phoenix (306), with Luce, Marquardt and DiRubbo each shooting 40 at SCC as Jude Pas’cal had a 48 and Cowden posted a 50.
Westhill put away Tully 195-246 at Camillus Golf Club last Monday afternoon. Anthony Maglisco returned to the forefront for the Warriors, breaking par with a 34 as Aidan Ryan shot 38, Devin Young had a 39 and Luke Gilmartin posted a 40.
Making it two wins in as many days, Westhill followed up with a 235-285 romp over Central Square. Danny Young’s 45 beat out Devin Young and Kyle MacCaull (46 each) for individual honors as Grady Pens added a 48.
During Friday’s match with Cazenovia, Westhill won again, 200-223, with Maglisco’s 37 edging Gilmartin’s 38 for top honors. Danny Young had a 40 and Ryan shot a 41, which Byrnes equaled to pace the Lakers.
Jordan-Elbridge met Mexico last Monday at Emerald Crest. Colin Jewsbury shot a 42 to share individual honors with the Tigers’ Andre Burns, but the Eagles lost 228-260 as Ben Weller, with a 46, was the only other J-E player to break 50.
A day later, against Chittenango at Millstone, J-E took a 213-237 defeat. Jewsbury and Weller both shot 44 and Caden Hearn improved to 45, but the Bears got a blistering 33 from Alex Moesch and a 37 from Tyrus Kelly.
In Thursday afternoon’s 208-269 loss to Homer, the Eagles saw Jewsbury shoot a 45 at Cortland Country Club and Weller add a 50, well off the under-par 34 from the Trojans’ Mitch Riter.
