Cazenovia College is pleased to announce the continuation of its Faculty Library Lecture Series: Great Minds/Great Ideas, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11, in the Cazenovia Public Library community room. This popular series features noted Cazenovia College faculty members who “discuss the lives and work of important thinkers who opened doors of opportunity for the human spirit.”
In the upcoming installment, Dr. Karin Bump, Full Professor of Equine Business Management, will present “How Xenophon shaped and reshaped our understanding of how best to work with horses.”
Xenophon was an ancient Greek horseman who wrote the first book on the topic of horsemanship. He promoted working with the nature of the horse to create a relationship of trust. Centuries later, the era of the Wild West introduced horse “breaking,” a tactic that involved working with horses in ways that caused intimidation and fright. However, great horsemen of recent years — led by Ray Hunt, whose work was mirrored in “The Horse Whisperer” — have brought us full circle by working with horses in the ways described by Xenophon ca. 350 BC.
This lecture is free and open to the public.
