SALINA — In December, Salina Library will host an exhibit by textile artist Suzanne Masters.
Masters attended Syracuse University, where she studied surface pattern and design, immersed in the detail. But her real love came from cultural art — henna artist and weaving — and integrating with gifts from nature (leaves, sticks, seeds and feathers, often).
“I love to marry several elements to create one piece, like my Spirit Paintings for individuals created with my dyed fabrics (shibori), a ceramic cuff engraved with words and design, small painted branches and small beads and feathers. They all speak to one another in unison,” said Suzanne. “I love to try new variations and do a series of pieces to express the process. Then I’m off to the next experience.”
Having been a painting contractor for many years, (as Suzanne and Son’s Painting, now), Suzanne said that painting walls was — and still is — just as much fun.
“[I love] the movement of paint across a surface and transforming large spaces with color. At one time this evolved into murals inside and out but these days I’m loving the intimacy of my studio,” she said. “Most recently, I’m working on small boards which give me more options for texture, etc., still with acrylics and adding collage, often working in several layers. I love the transparency of one image under another. And the ideas are endless! What a life!”
Meet the artist at a reception from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6. Masks are required.
Masters’ work will be on display Dec. 3-31 at Salina Library, located at 100 Belmont St. in Mattydale. The library is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The library is closed Sundays and on Dec. 24 and 25.
