CENTRAL NEW YORK – What happened in the last week of the regular season would play a large factor in just where the Chittenango girls soccer team would end up place in the Section III playoff bracket.
Having lost 5-4 to Syracuse City on Oct. 5, the Bears leaned even more on Abby Scheidelman to return to the win column last Tuesday as it defeated Hannibal/Cato-Meridian 5-2.
Amber Clarke’s pair of first-half goals kept Hannibal/Cato in it early, but Scheidelman still led Chittenango to a 3-2 edge at the break and converted twice more in the second half.
All told, Scheidelman had four goals to move her season total to 27 and added an assist on the Bears’ other tally by Taylor Velardi, while Gracie Hayes-Brazell also had an assist.
Then, in Saturday’s game against Westhill, the Bears would go back and forth but eventually emerge with a 3-2 victory over the Warriors.
Scheidelman’s pair of goals, along with a goal from Hannah Machan, was enough to offset Grace Stroman and Kara Rosenberger finding the net for Westhill. Sue Horning made eight saves, two more than Warriors counterpart Sophia Lasher.
Cazenovia looked to recover from a lopsided Oct. 5 defeat to Bishop Ludden, only to run into state Class B no. 5-ranked Christian Brothers Academy again last Tuesday at Alibrandi Stadium.
The 5-0 defeat meant that the Lakers were outscored 11-0 in its two meetings with the Brothers. Katherine Williamson and Emma Hill each notched one goal and one assist while. the other goals went to Anisa Tavarez, Olivia Jones and Ciara Duggan, with Carleagh Morgia earning two assists.
Yet another shutout happened Thursday night, Cazenovia’s defense improving against Phoenix, but still taking a 2-0 defeat to the Firebirds, who limited the Lakers to just two shots all game and converted with goals from Paige Pinkley and Brooklyn Olschewske.
