CENTRAL NEW YORK – Led again by Eliana Occhino, the Christian Brothers Academy girls bowling team remains undefeated and without a point given up in any of its four matches this winter.
The Brothers prevailed again Tuesday 7-0 over Cortland at Strike-N-Spare Lanes, with Occhino’s 256 opening game the highlight of a 650 series that also included games of 204 and 190. Sophia Ciereck started with a 167 on her way to a 420 set as Violet Bezigian and Sierra Burke had matching three-game totals of 352.
This happened as CBA’s boys took a 5-2 defeat to Cortland, a match where Tom Dearnaley stood out for the Brothers, his 667 series featuring games of 218, 212 and 237. Chanu Yang (450 series) and Jack Landau (444 series) were further back as the Purple Tigers’ Jeremie Hale shot a 684 series with games of 238, 235 and 211.
Both of CBA’s teams would win on Wednesday against Chittenango, Dearnaley shooting a 206 and 255 to close out a 633 series in the boys 5-2 win over the Bears as Yang had games of 184 and 183 during his 501 set.
As for Occhino, her 228, 211 and 182 produced a 621 series in the CBA girls’ latest 7-0 shutout, with Ciereck opening with a 176 on her way to a 465 series and Burke improving in a big way to a 418 series.
East Syracuse Minoa had its boys team battle with Auburn Wednesday afternoon, the action proving close but the Spartans taking a 4-3 defeat to the Maroons.
Zach Kassel’s second-game 268 led to a 699 series. Luke Liedka closed with a 247 after a 199 and 203 in his 649 set, Joe Gardner starting with a 243 in a 610 series and Mike Saunders’ first-game 252 part of a 609 series.
Despite all this, plus a 233 game from Ryan Dablock in a 597 series and Alex Locke getting a 548 series, Auburn won with Eric Barski shooting 268, 235 and 226 in a 729 series, helped by Caleb Pidlypchak (632 series), Jack Sliwka (628 series) and Lucas McConnell (626 series).
But the ESM girls beat Auburn 5-2, Alana Tuberville shooting a second-game 226 on her way to a 551 series as Jewelianna Hallock closed with a 189 in a 511 series. Ruth Birmingham added a 451 set, the Spartans offsetting a 569 series from Marissa Capone and 556 series from Maroons teammate Grace Ryan.
Both of the Fayetteville-Manlius teams were unable to get points from their matches with Baldwinsville Tuesday afternoon at B’ville Sports Bowl.
The boys Hornets’ 7-0 defeat saw no bowler roll a game higher than Gabriel Williams’ 193, though he added a 191 and 173 for a 557 series as Sean Bird had a 511 set and John Antczak a 500 series, all of them behind twin 659 series from the Bees’ Jordan Sevigny and Wes Lell and a 641 series from Zenon Gasiorowski.
Against the reigning state Division I champions from B’ville, the F-M girls also could not get a point, though Samantha Geiss bowled well for the Hornets with games of 180, 191 and 181 in her 552 series.
No other Hornet got close to that total, though, as B’ville’s Samantha Hass started with a 236 and closed with a season-best 268 during her 675 series.
F-M bowled again on Wednesday against Cicero-North Syracuse, and this time the girls found success, its 7-0 victory led by Andrea Aguilar-Miranda as she shot 174 and 175 during a 507 series. Teagan Hunt closed with a 167 in her 457 series and Samantha Geiss started with a 174 on her way to a 443 set.
At the same time, the boys Hornets lost to the Northstars by that same 7-0 margin. Bird’s 545 series and Williams’ 525 series at Strike-N-Spare were eclipsed as Tom O’Connell (633 series) and Jacob Calabria (632 series) led C-NS.
Bishop Grimes got close to a sweep in Tuesday’s match with Altmar-Parish-Williamstown, with the girls prevailing 5-2 led by a 339 series from Lania Young and 305 series from Caitlin Killoran, but the boys Cobras taking a 4-3 defeat to the Rebels.
Alec Kline closed with a 160 game in his 445 series. Victor Rizzo had a three-game total of 415 as Casey Mienek earned a 405 series. APW ended up with a 2,191 pinfall to Grimes’ 1,926, led by Keagan Daniels’ 435 series and Giorgio Martila’s 407 set.
