CENTRAL NEW YORK – Most of the times that the Fayetteville-Manlius ice hockey team confronted Baldwinsville in seasons past, it would skate away on the wrong end of things.
That wasn’t the case in Lysander last Tuesday night, though, as the Hornets converted early and, with its physical play and a superb defense, didn’t let up until it defeated the Bees 3-0.
F-M arrived at this game with a 3-2 record, and all the time it had spent in game action meant that it was prepared for B’ville’s physical play, which it answered with strong defense and timely scoring plays.
B’ville had plenty of opportunities throughout the night, ultimately taking 36 shots. But Chris Finger stopped all of them, giving his Hornets teammates more confidence as the night went on.
Once in each period, F-M was able to convert. Tyler Mayne, Joey Leveroni and Greyson Mucha scored, with Walker Thomson getting two assists as single assists went to Leveroni, Nico Capriotti, Brady Moore and Gavin Patnode.
Back on Tuesday night, Christian Brothers Academy/Jamesville-DeWitt put its four-game win streak on the line against reigning state Division II champion Skaneateles at Onondaga Nation Arena.
With first place in the league at stake, the Brothers found itself in a constant defensive mode throughout the night, which ultimately took a toll and led to a 7-0 defeat to the Lakers.
Having paid full attention to what the Brothers did in starting its season, the Lakers were patient in the early going, waiting for opportunities to spring up.
They did so in the second period as Skaneateles, up 1-0, struck four times to put CBA/J-D away, with Luke Mizro at the forefront as he would record a three-goal hat trick and add an assist.
Jack Marquardt scored twice, with Jack Torrey getting three assists. All of this negated a valiant performance by Justin Buffum, who made 37 saves for the Brothers, but his teammates managed just 11 total shots, all stopped by Danny Angelina.
Things did not turn around in CBA/J-D’s game against New Hartford two nights later, the Spartans also managing to keep the Brothers off the board on the way to prevailing 3-0.
A goal in the first period put New Hartford in front, and it stayed 1-0 until the third, when the Spartans, sparked by Derek Joy stopping all 28 shots he faced, tacked on a pair of insurance tallies.
Lovell was good, too, finishing with 32 saves, but Gavin Lapolla gave New Hartford a goal and assisted on Anthony Falvo’s tally as Rowan Gall and Jake Hill each added two assists.
