CENTRAL NEW YORK – Easily improving to 2-0 on the season, the Jamesville-DeWitt/Christian Brothers Academy boys swim team handled Syracuse City by a score of 90-68 in last Tuesday night’s meet.
Misha Kabunov swam the 50-yard freestyle and won in 23.28 seconds, edging Syracuse’s Badr Aly (23.63), before he won the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.09 to beat the 1:06.35 from Aly as and 1:08.80 from Sean Fnnerty.
Lucien Zens got first in the 500 freestyle in 5:32.01. Cameron Corona picked up 241.55 points on the diving board as teammate Garrett Fuller finished second.
Jonas Sarmast beat the field in the 200 freestyle in 2:15.70 and got first in the 100 backstroke in 1:06.65 ahead of Zach Curie’s 1:17.51, while in the 200 individual medley Ryan Bannon prevailed in 2:23.89, pulling away from Blaise Zens, who finished in 2:44.52. J-D/CBA went 1:53 flat in the 200 freestyle relay
A close 100 butterfly went to Daniel Luo in 1:05.62 to Kyler Huyck’s 1:05.84, with Ryan Bannon third. Matt Radford followed by edging Drew Babikian, 1:02.22 to 1:03.76, in the 100 freestyle. Lesha Kabunov was third in the 50 freestyle in 23.67.
Later in the week, Fayetteville-Manlius finally got its season underway, taking on Mexico and doing enough to earn a 90-83 victory over the Tigers.
Derick Wang’s time of 23.38 seconds in the 50 freestyle beat out the 24.21 from James Cao, and Wang completed a sprint sweep by going 53.49 in the 100 freestyle to beat out Mexico’s Bill Mills in 54.85. Cao was first in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.76.
Going 1-2-3 in the 200 individual medley, the Hornets had Max Vidakovic prevail in 2:21.35 over Anthony Bottar (2:22.47) and Ben Prendergast (2:23.43). A close 200 freestyle had Eli Kligerman, in 2:00.15, beat out the 2:00.80 from teammate Ben Mathews, Bottar later beating the field in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.06 as Vlad Roman (1:13.32) was second
Vidakovic added a second title in the 100 butterfly in 58.77 seconds, with Prendergast second in 1:02.78, while Kligerman would swim the 500 freestyle in 5:41.42 to hold of Mathews’ 5:42.66.
F-M also swam the 200 medley relay in 1:47.43, the 200 freestyle relay in 1:49.41 and 400 freestyle relay in 3:45.28 as Oliver Gleasman earned 167.65 points on the diving board.
Manlius Pebble Hill, in a meet with Oneida and Rome Free Academy, had Sun-Jin Shah win twice, going 22.78 seconds in the 50 freestyle and then tearing through the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.47, not far from the state qualifying standard of 1:01.20.
