LIVERPOOL – With the top spot in the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division at stake, the Liverpool girls swim team welcomed Fayetteville-Manlius for last Wednesday’s showdown.
And while the Warriors had plenty of success in individual events, the depth of the Hornets and the second and third-place finishes it earned proved a difference as it prevailed 94-78.
Kaitlyn Thompson led Liverpool’s efforts. In the 100-yard backstroke, Thompson finished in one minute, 5.16 seconds to beat out the 1:07.56 from F-M’s Gabby Dardis.
Just before that, Thompson, Arianna Kuznia, Sarah Colwell and Elizabeth Manley won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:47.86 to the Hornets’ 1:51.91, to go with a 400 freestyle relay where that same quartet went 3:58.63, topping F-M’s 4:03.60.
Kuznia got her own title in the 200 individual medley in 2:28.05 and was second in the 100 freestyle in 58.09 seconds to Georgia Langan’s 56.66. June Pioroeski beat the field in the diving competition with 217.65 points.
Colwell, in 2:07.05, was second in the 200 freestyle, just behind Elise Wratney’s 2:06.83, and added a second in the 500 freestyle in 5:51.42, where Wratney went 5:35.49. Langan added a 50 freestyle title in 25.71 seconds to Thompson’s 25.93.
Pioroeski went on to compete in Saturday’s Burgos Dive Invitational at Nottingham High School, where with 389.3 points she took third place, edged out by Cicero-North Syracuse diver Sophia Sugrue and her total of 390.45.
Molly Murphy, Pioroeski’s teammate, was fourth with 366.15 points, while the Northstars’ Isabella Moya was seventh with 319.6 and Liverpool’s Sofia Valente (299.8) was ninth. Jamesville-DeWitt’s Kayla McQuaid won with a total of 456.55 that qualified her for November’s state championship meet.
