CENTRAL NEW YORK – At least until late last week, the Cazenovia girls volleyball team was sailing along, establishing itself as a challenger to Skaneateles and Westhill among the top Class B sides
A mere 24 hours after handing unbeaten LaFayette its first defeat of the season on Sept. 21, Cazenovia avoided a letdown, sweeping Solvay in three sets.
Other than a 26-24 second set, the Lakers controlled matters, winning the opener 25-10 and the third set 25-13 led by Lucy Bliss, who amassed 11 assists, five aces and six digs. Olivia Pirkl added six digs.
Then, facing Cortland last Tuesday night, Cazenovia roared through the first two sets 25-15 and 25-12, so it could absorb a 25-18 defeat in the third set and close out the Purple Tigers 25-13 in the fourth.
Becca Ziemba picked up eight assists and six digs, while Bliss, aside from her seven assists, led the Lakers with 15 digs, adding three aces and two kills.
Prykl also earned three aces as she got 13 digs and four kills. Mya Skeele stepped up with four kills and 11 digs, while Alyssa Wardell picked up three kills.
Cazenovia was rolling along until Thursday’s match with Marcellus, where the Lakers saw its win streak halted at four and were unable to do much in a 25-18, 25-22, 25-17 defeat to the Mustangs.
The only good thing was that Cazenovia would get another chance against Marcellus Wednesday night after a Monday-night trip to Phoenix.
