ONONDAGA COUNTY – Quite unlike the challenges it faced in previous weeks, the Baldwinsville girls tennis team rolled past opposition in the last full week of the regular season.
It commenced last Monday with the Bees taking out Henninger 7-0, a remarkable match where six contests all ended in 6-0, 6-0 shutouts.
B’ville’s singles trio of Mira Nadzan, Alya Kalfass and Ella Clary all won without surrendering a single game, and the same was true for the doubles teams of Lainey Nesbitt-Jasmine Rowda, Laine Zoanetti-Layla Trendowski and Rowda returning to pair with Livia Zoanetti.
Next for the Bees was a Wednesday match at Cicero-North Syracuse, a team it shut out Sept. 13. It was tougher in the rematch due to some battles in doubles, but B’ville still beat the Northstars 5-2.
Shutouts from Kalfass (over Calista Nguyen) and Mira Nadzan (over Meghan Obleman) were augmented by Clary’s 6-2, 6-0 singles romp over Maddie Frisch.
Meanwhile, in doubles Trendowski and Laine Zoanetti had a first-set shutout, yet still lost to Andrea Iqbal and Jaila Killingbeck 0-6, 6-1, 6-3, but the duo of Rowda and Livia Zoanetti made their own comeback to win 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 over Kat McRobbie-Taru and Mackenzie Prentice.
The regular-season finale at Liverpool went in the same direction, B’ville turning back the Warriors 6-1 and only suffering a setback when Nesbitt, paired with Carmela Budzich, fell 6-2, 6-0 to Angelica Underwood and Olivia Magnarelli.
Clary handled Jaspreet Purewal 6-2, 6-0 and Mira Nadzan got a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Allie Kerneklian as, in doubles, Rawda and Laine Zoanetti set the tone, winning 6-0, 6-2 over Angela Morgans and Christy Bui.
Trendowski and Livia Zoanetti had their own 6-2, 6-0 decision over Kamry Scanna and Isabella Turck, while Juliette Pawelek and Aiden Dubois stepped up to beat Hailey Jaquin and Lauren Graham 6-3, 6-2.
Drawing the no. 3 seed for the Class A sectional team tournament, the Bees face no. 6 seed Central Square in Monday’s opening round, the winner to advance to a semifinal Tuesday against Auburn or C-NS.
