ONONDAGA COUNTY – As it turned out, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls volleyball team still had something left after the long, exhausting Hornet Pride Tournament on Sept. 9 resulted in a finals appearance and a defeat to Westhill.
For when the Hornets faced Jamesville-DeWitt just two nights later, it was victorious in the neighborhood clash, beating the Red Rams in four sets.
Even when J-D took the opener 25-21, F-M absorbed it and, in the second set, ran over the Rams 25-7. Though the third and fourth sets were far closer ,the Hornets gradually pulled away for 25-17 and 25-18 decisions.
Kalyna Dannenberg led F-M’s front line, putting away 18 kills. Rebekah Beasley had nine kills and 11 digs, with Malana Noble adding six kills and Olivia Tom Four kills.
On the Hornets’ back line, Ava Zerillo gained 36 assists, with Kathryn McNany notching 14 digs as, to lead J-D, Cadence Milligan earned 25 assists.
Kanami LaClair and Sophia Zoghby had 10 digs apiece, Claire Trevisni getting nine digs and Milligan seven digs. Aaliyah Anderson earned a team-best seven kills, with Merris Kessler getting six kills and five blocks. Trevisani and Beasley had five kills apiece.
Rebounding on Wednesday night, J-D swept PSLA-Fowler 25-11, 25-11, 25-8. The Rams had 33 aces, eight each by Celia Kemmis and Rekha Phoha, while Milligan had five aces and Alana Bates four aces. Milligan and Yeva Balayan had six assists apiece and Anderson led with five kills.
Yet when the Rams faced unbeaten Liverpool on Friday, it lost in three sets 25-6, 25-17, 25-14. Anderson got five kills and Trevisani four kills in front of Milligan (eight assists) and Kanami LaClair (nine digs), but the Warriors had too much, led by Madison Ames’ 11 kills and 10 digs, 17 assists from Allyson Crandall and 15 assists from Addie Tanton.
Bishop Grimes moved back to the .500 mark (2-2) last Tuesday night at Cato-Meridian, sweeping its way past the Blue Devils in close 25-23 and 28-26 sets before taking the third 25-15.
Kayla Duenkel poured in 11 kills, with Chloe Dailey adding eight kills. Saba Fasama (five kills) and Ava Christodoulou (four kills) helped out as Christodolou earned 18 assists and Elizabeth Corl got 10 digs. Dailey and Fasama matched Christodolou’s total of seven digs.
In Friday’s match against LaFayette, Grimes could not keep up in a 25-7, 25-17, 25-21 defeat, with Chylure Bucktooth getting five kills and nine assists for the victorious Lancers.
