CENTRAL NEW YORK – On a busy Sept. 9 the Cazenovia girls soccer team won the consolation game of the Mount Markham Tournament 6-3 over Utica Proctor, a tough game where it was only 3-2 at halftime before the Lakers were able to pull away in the second half, this despite going to penalty kicks against Hamilton the day before.
Leading this push, Raeanne Thompson scored twice and got two assists. Dinah Gifford also had a pair of goals, with Sally Hughes and Maura Phillips each adding one goal and one assist. Abby Lansing had two assists
Meanwhile, Chittenango ripped Jordan-Elbridge/Cato-Meridian 8-1 as Abby Scheidelman proved unstoppable, not only getting a three-goal hat trick but picking up three assists.
Danielle Ramie helped out, scoring twice, while Taylor Verlardi added a goal. Assists were also credited to Abby Baldwin, Madelyn Dziedzic and Alex Sylstra, with Rebecca Baldwin’s nine saves leading to another shutout.
In a far closer game last Tuesday night against Mexico, the Bears battled through the rain and did just enough to claim a 1-0 decision over the Tigers for its third win in a row.
Scheidelman was the focus of Mexico’s defense, but still put in the game’s only goal. The Tigers had all kinds of chances to answer, but with her 11 saves, Baldwin picked up a well-earned shutout.
Playing back-to-back, Chittenango went to Oswego a night later and won again, stopping the Buccaneers 3-1 for its fourth win in a row.
Again, Scheidelman was the focal point, burning Oswego for a pair of goals as Ramie got the other and Abby Baldwin earned an assist. Challenged in net, Rebecca Baldwin stopped all eight shots she faced.
Cazenovia moved on from the Hamilton Tournament and, in last Tuesday’s rain-soaked game against Hannibal/Cato-Meridian, splashed its way to a 1-0 victory.
Amid the tough conditions, Hannibal goalie Hailey McCarthy constantly thwarted the Lakers with 17 saves, but Ella Baker’s goal, assisted by Thompson, proved enough as Skye Stanford stopped all nine shots she faced.
Home again Thursday to face Rome Free Academy, Cazenovia was kept off the board by the Black Knights in a 2-0 defeat, seeing all 10 of its shots stopped by Black Knights goalie Gabrielle Seeley. Stanford finished with 12 saves.
As the Bears face Holland Patent, Homer and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill this week, it announced it will face Cazenovia Sept. 29 at 4;30 at the Sean Googin Sports Complex to accommodate Chittenango’s Homecomning festivities.
