CENTRAL NEW YORK – Nothing the Fayetteville-Manlius Green boys golf team will do the rest of the regular season will resonate as much as what it did in last Friday’s match against Baldwinsville Red at Green Lakes.
When the Hornets prevailed 192-203, it not only knocked off the defending SCAC Metro and Section III champions, it also ended a 24-match win streak the Bees owned which dated back nearly two full seasons, to September 2021.
This was a day where everyone on F-M Green’s roster played steady golf, claiming five of the six spots behind the leading 35 posted by B’ville’s Owen Frechette.
Will Kettell led the Hornets with a 37, while Cameron Lukasik and Henry Will each shot 38. Tyler Burns had a 39 to match B’ville’s Billy Shipman, and Duncan McDaniel’s 40 clinched the victory.
Back on Aug. 31, F-M Green handled Cicero-North Syracuse Green 205-241 at Greens at Beaumont. Kettell led all individuals shooting a 38, with Burns posting 41. Three others – McDaniel, Dylan Friedman and Hugh Roddy – each shot 42 to tie for third place, a solid performance, but nothing compared to what it would do against B’ville Red a week later.
Teams from Jamesville-DeWitt and Christian Brothers Academy continued to roll through their competition as the calendar turned to September.
Having won three consecutive SCAC Empire division tournaments, the Red Rams made it four in a row on Aug. 31 at Auburn’s Highland Golf Course.
Shooting 193 to runner-up Oswego’s 216, J-D had a top-three individual sweep, Jackson Saroney shooting 35 for nine holes as Sam Ahn and Tate Mullin both posted 37 to tie for second. Brian Tollar and Mitchell Archer both posted 42.
East Syracuse Minoa, with a 240, settled for fourth place behind host Auburn (221) in third, but the Spartans’ Braedon Smith tied for fifth among individuals with a 40 as Logan Welch added a 45.
CBA played on Aug. 31 against Cortland at Drumlins and routed the Purple Tigers 193-252. Jack Gregory and Dempsey Horan tied for individual honors, each posting 37, while Luke Snyder shot 38. Eric Lee’s 40 beat out 41s from Rowen Lynch and Emmet Kilmartin.
When it returned to action in last Tuesday’s heat, the Brothers remained in top form, handling Chittenango 187-258 at Woodcrest.
Again, Gregory played well, his 34 breaking par as Lynch finished second with a 37. Kilmartin and James Stanton and Kilmartin both shot 38, with Zach Cooper stepping up to finish fifth with a 40 and Snyder adding a 41.
Even more important was last Wednesday’s 196-227 victory over Marcellus, who had got off to a 3-0 start moving to a fall schedule after previously playing in the spring.
Lynch won individual honors this time, putting up a 36. That edged Snyder’s latest 38 and Gregory’s 39 as Kilmartin, with a 41, equaled the Mustangs’ low round by John Williams. Stanton finished with a 42.
F-M White was close on Aug. 31 in a 199-204 defeat to West Genesee Blue, Grant Rhyde shooting 39 behind a 36 from the Wildcats’ Lincoln Christopher and equaled by Topher Shoults. Gavin Balinfly had a 40 and Taden Minichillo finished with a 43, as did Chet Baron-Phillips.
A day later, meeting WG’s Gold team, the Hornets lost 189-215. Turner Berry shot 40, with Balinfly adding a 41 and Rhyde a 42 behind a top-five Wildcats sweep led by Ben Glass, who had a 35. Then F-M White took a 185-226 defeat to C-NS Blue on Friday afternoon.
