ONONDAGA COUNTY – Right at the end of August, the Cicero-North Syracuse Blue boys golf team got within a single stroke of ending Baldwinsville’s two-season, 22-match win streak.
When these two undefeated sides squared off at Arrowhead Golf Course on Aug. 31, every drive, chip and putt counted toward the final result, and the Northstars fell 204-205 to the Bees.
Individually, Drew Kippen’s 38 tied the Bees’ Owen Frechette for top honors. Two of the next three spots went to B’ville, though, as Quinn Empey’s 41 matched Billy Shipman behind the Bees’ Aiden Motala and his 40.
Though Kaeden Hacker, David Schmidt and Andrew Matyasak each shot 42, so did B’ville’s Jacob Penafeather, and needing a 43 to win, the Bees got it from Caleb Kinley to hang on.
As it turned out, B’ville did lose last Friday, to Fayetteville-Manlius Green, which halted the win streak at 24 and opened up the league title race.
C-NS Blue was back on the course Friday, defeating F-M White 185-226. Strong rounds by Kippen (34), Hacker (35) and Matyasik (36) led the way as Nate Bustin had a 39, with 41s from Empey, Ethan Hanson and Luke Deinhart.
Back on Aug. 31, C-NS Green met F-M Green at Beaumont and lost, 205-241. Joe LaFrance’s 46 beat out Jadien Gunnip (47), Blake Wise (48) and Cooper Pallotta (49), but the Hornets swept the top six, led by Will Kettell’s 38, the only score under 40.
A 186-241 defeat to West Genesee Gold followed on Friday, the Wildcats grabbing first place in the league standings led by a 35 from Ben Glass and 36 from Ashton Fassinger. Wise and Andrew Dolson both shot 47 for the Northstars.
Liverpool lost on Aug. 31 to West Genesee Gold 200-210 at Westvale. Owen Salanger’s 39 equaled that of the Wildcats’ Jason Clifton, but Brady Michaud’s 41 was bettered or equaled by three WG Gold golfers as Alex Kirkby shot 43 and Dom Osbeck added a 44.
When it returned to action last Tuesday against C-NS Green, though, it was the Warriors prevailing 203-244 at Foxfire to move to 2-3 on the season.
Owen Michaud, with a 36, matched par, Salenger adding a 40. Jake Berthoff’s 41 beat out Brady Michaud’s 42 and Kirkby’s 44 as, for C-NS Green, LaFrance and Gunnip both shot 47, Dolson a 48 and Wise a 49.
