ONEIDA – Finishing off a spring where all kinds of team and individual honors were attained, three area girls golfers will take part in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships.
When the state tournament tees off June 3 at Edison Country Club near Saratoga Springs, golfers from Jamesville-DeWitt, Christian Brothers Academy and Manlius Pebble Hill will all be in it.
It was J-D’s Sarah Burgess leading the local contingent at Tuesday’s Section III championships at Kanon Valley Country Club, finishing second among individuals.
Netting an 86 for 18 holes, Burgess beat everyone except Sauquoit Valley’s Kameryn Yerman, who pulled away for the individual medal by shooting an 82.
Just behind Burgess, it was CBA’s Hana Kang finishing with a 91 to tie for fifth place, while MPH’s Amitees Fazeli earned a 92 and finished alone in seventh place.
Burgess, Kang and Fazeli join Yerman and her Sauquoit teammate, Alana Weaver, along with Rome Free Academy’s Evie Denton, Remsen’s Ellie Secor and Cicero-North Syracuse players Isabella Borte and Lindsay Kubala on the Section III squad for the state tournament.
A day earlier, in the boys golf sectional West region spring tournament at the Pompey Club, MPH was victorious in the small-school team portion.
Not only that, but the Trojans had three golfers advance to the state qualifier later in the week. James Wildhack, with an 86, led MPH as Nate Orsen had an 89 and Dash Goode just made the cut with a 92. Bishop Grimes‘ Dom Kensey, with a 91, was one stroke head of Goode.
When the first round of the state qualifier took place at Seven Oaks, none of the spring golfers made the cut, but four from the fall season did.
J-D’s Mitchell Archer and Jackson Saroney were tied for fourth with twin rounds of 80, while teammate Trey Jacobson had an 82 and CBA’s Jack Gregory matched that 82.
Many others missed the cut, too, from Fayetteville-Manlius’ Luke Weisiger and Will Kettell to J-D’s Blaise Anthis, Brian Tollar and Sam Ahn, plus East Syracuse Minoa’s Zach Johnson.
