CENTRAL NEW YORK – In both the regular season and in its first post-season action, the Christian Brothers Academy girls golf team found no one capable of keeping up with them.
When Onondaga High School League golfers gathered at Woodcrest for Wednesday’s league Richard Winstead Tournament, the Brothers ended up with both team and individual honors.
The individual race proved more dramatic, CBA’s Hana Kang and Grace Catalano, along with Manlius Pebble Hill’s Amitees Fazeli going to the wire.
Shooting an 84 for 18 holes, Kang edged Fazeli’s 85 by a single shot and Catalano (86) by two shots, while CBA also had Clara Defilippis get sixth place with a 99 and Meredith Sommers, with a 107, end up alone in ninth place.
CBA had already won once at Woodcrest earlier in the week, handling Chittenango 183-249 as Anna Fuller shot a 41 and Catalano a 43, with Kang getting a 48.
Another tournament took place Thursday among SCAC Empire division teams at the Pompey Club and Jamesville-DeWitt won it, shooting 407 to beat East Syracuse Minoa (434) in second place.
Individually, Sarah Burgess shot 91 to lead the Red Rams and edge Oswego’s Catherine Callen (93) for top honors. Yara Farah shot 103, Jaeda Robinson had 104 and Anna Smith 109 as Isabelle Chavoustie got a 102 to finish third for ESM ahead of a 108 from Camden Woodward and 110 from Shayla Sanson.
A regular-season league title was at stake when Fayetteville-Manlius Green squared off with Cicero-North Syracuse Blue twice in three days – and lost both matches by close margins.
The first match last Tuesday at Green Lakers went 177-182 in the Northstars’ favor. Elizabeth Noel and Bella Fullmer both shot 45, with Alana Isley and Gabby Dardis getting matching totals of 46 and Erin Graves picking up a 48 and Lindsey Chong a 49.
Yet C-NS Blue got the low rounds of 42 from Isabella Borte and Jessica Ricciardi, plus a 45 from Natalie Hacker to equal Noel and Fullmer. Chloe Tice’s 48 helped the Northstars hang on.
In Thursday’s rematch at Lakeshore, C-NS Blue again pulled it out, this time 182-191, with Borte’s 40 the low round by five strokes over Ricciardi and each of them ahead of 47s by Isley, Dardis and Dong, which Tice matched.
Back on Monday, F-M Green defeated Baldwinsville 185-202 at Green Lakes, sweeping the individual top three as Graves shot a 44, Fullmer got a 45 and Chong a 47 ahead of 49 from the Bees’ Eva Pawelek, which Lucia Melfi matched.
F-M White would prevail 190-235 over C-NS’s Green team at Beaumont, with consistent play up front. Georgia Perry and Claire Zerillo both posted 46, with Emily Pollard getting a 48 and Sydney Hines a 50.
Then those Hornets made it back-to-back wins by topping Baldwinsville 204-212 at Timber Banks, led by 49s from Perry and Zerrillo along with a 51 from Katherine Parmley and a 55 from Hines.
