CENTRAL NEW YORK – Though this week’s Section III boys tennis tournaments contained plenty of struggles for some local teams, Skaneateles did prevail in first doubles in Class C-1.
The Lakers’ team of Max Karpinski and Peter Salzhauer dropped just one game in four sets leading up to the finals, roaring past Ben Donnelly and Ryan Mitchell (Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) as well as Clinton’s duo of Boone Schaffer and John Falbo.
Far tougher was the final against Cazenovia’s Evan Molloy and Max Reger, where Karpinski and Salzhauer dominated the fist set 6-0 and dropped the second 6-4 before rolling to a 6-2 win in the final set
Cazenovia swept all of the singles divisions, while Skaneateles had Jake Salzhauer get fourth in first singles and James Lovier finish fourth in third singles, Kevin Torrisi lost in the second singles quarterfinals as, in that same round in second doubles, Jackson Kennedy and Evan Wingfield took a defeat.
Marcellus was also in the Class C sectional tournament, seeing Michael Devereaux and Jose Carlos Urrea finish third in first doubles, falling to Molloy and Reger in the semifinals, but recovering to top Schaffer and Falbo 6-3, 6-1 in the consolation fina,l.
Errol Fern lost his quartefinal in third singles, while Robert Bartolotta and Kevin Shea fell in the quartefinal round in second doubles.
Up in Class B, Westhill had Zane Eldred finish fourth in second singles, falling 6-0, 6-1 to Jamesville-DeWitt’s Anthony Fico in the semifinals. Andrew Sadowski and Alex Tyszka lose in the quarterfinals in second doubles, while in singles Shay Smyth and Cameron Lopez also took quarterfinals defeats.
