SYRACUSE – Another season of Baldwinsville wrestling would conclude with the Bees’ participation in last Saturday’s Section III Division I championships at SRC Arena.
Only the winners in the 13 weight classes were guaranteed trips to Albany for the Feb. 24-25 New York State Public High School Athletic Association meet, and no B’ville wrestler would reach the championship round.
Keagan Hayes, the no. 4 seed at 138 pounds, won his quarterfinal by pinning Harrison Schwab (Fayetteville-Manlius), but then got pinned in 46 seconds in the semifinals by the eventual champion, Indian River’s Manuel Gonzales.
But then Hayes won both of his consolation bouts, blanking Cicero-North Syracuse’s Sean Aldrich 5-0 and securing third place when he pinned Rome Free Academy’s Chad Tennant in the third period.
At 172 pounds, no. 3 seed Aaron Fredenburg pinned Michael Roberts (Watertown) but lost in the semifinals to C-NS’s Jack Sherbourne. He beat Murphy again, but settled for fourth place after a 9-3 loss to Central Square’s Dante Coppola.
Judson Ferris also was fourth, his road at 189 pounds including wins over Liverpool’s Jayce Bliss in a 57-second pin and a 9-6 decision over Zach Overton (Central Square), but also a semifinal defeat to Syracuse’s Trey Dermody-Latham and a narrow 6-5 loss to Bliss in the consolation bracket final.
Levi Schanzenbach finished sixth at 118 pounds, his lone win a 24-second pin over Carson Crump (Carthage) after an 11-1 quarterfinal defeat to C-NS’s Anthony Ciciarelli.
Olu Gbengbe (145 pounds) pinned Dylan Kolk (Carthage) in the third period of the opening round, only to lose in the quarterfinals 9-3 to Fulton’s Bailey Grubb, who went on to finish second.
Brennan Kline, at 102 pounds, lost in the opening round 8-3 to C-NS’s Kasey Kalfass before a 4-1 defeat to J-D/CBA’s Dominic Shiano.
Collin Zeman (126 pounds) had an 8-2 defeat to Marek Sokolowski (Liverpool) and a pin from C-NS’s Drew Baker, with Davian McLeod (152 pounds) falling to Syracuse’s Jesus Moreno 16-7 and also lost to Fulton’s Jayden Hutchinson.
