SYRACUSE – Once more, it was the Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse Minoa indoor track and field teams pulling away from the competition during Thursday’s Section III Class A championships at SRC Arena.
And the Red Rams would sweep the team honors. J-D had 165 points to the Spartans’ 115 in the boys meet, and in the girls meet it was 152.5 points to get clear of ESM’s 107.5.
Still, both sides won plenty on this night, including J-D boys runner Connor Clarkson, who took the 1,000-meter run in two minutes, 45.67 seconds over teammate Chris Donoghue (2:48.65) as ESM had Joe Pedrosa-Garcia (2:50.48) edging Brandon Cerlanck (2:50.74) for third place.
Another win for Clarkson came in the 1,600, where in 4:47.29 he held off Oswego’s Daniel Dunn (4:48.19) as Isaiah Sternberg took third place in 5:01.09.
Hudson Groat prevailed at 600 meters in 1:26.94, with Shane Garguilo third in 1:31.37 and Andres Valladares fifth (1:32.67) behind ESM’s Stephen Winans (1:31.54) in fourth place. And in the 4×800 relay, Groat, Donoghue, Peter Drew and Ryan Carter won in 8:53.39 to the Spartans’ second-place 9:17.35.
Daviel Cruz was victorious in the weight throw, setting a personal mark with 51’4” as Kevin Vingeault was third with 43’10” and Caleb Fowler (42’11”) in fifth place.
Drew, in 11:04.18, beat out Paul Fischi (11:07.42) for second place in the 3,200-meter run. Emile Antoine’s long jump of 18’8 1/4” was second as Adam Rigdon was fourth with 18’3”, Antoine adding a third-place triple jump of 39’8” as Harpeet Duggal (38’6 3/4”) was fith. Brayden Rivera was third in the 300-meter dash in 37.98 seconds, with Moujiahid Cherif (37.99) right behind in fourth.
Leading ESM, Abdi Aden, in 7.99 seconds, led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 55 hurdles, Jay-Neil McDuffie close behind in second place (8.04) as Phil Moore took third in 8.60. Aden took third in the long jump with 18’7 3/4” as Moore and Michael Ojeda both went 18’2 3/4”, tying for fifth.
ESM won a classic 4×400 relay where Aidan Hirt, Caleb Byrd, Sol Scofield and LeShaun Benjamin, in 3:35.92, beat J-D’s quartet of Rivera, Cherif, Valladares and Ryan Carter (3:35.93) by one-hundredth of a second, a near dead heat.
Caleb Byrd had to top 5’8” with fewer misses than Valladares to win the high jump as Michael Ojeda was third with 5’6” and Nathan Cottet (5’2”) in fourth place.
Luke Mancini, topping 11 feet, was second in the pole vault as J-D’s Deacon Enright (8’6”) topped Ojeda (8 feet) in fourth place. Mekai Carroll had a third-place shot put toss of 42’4”, with Victor Rodriguez fifth and the Rams’ Kevin Vigneault between them in fourth.
Sumit Kadariya was third in the 55-meter dash in 6.83, with J-D getting Rivera in fifth place (6.92) and Adam Rigdon (6.97) in sixth place. The Spartans were second (1:37.80) to beat the Rams (1:38.61) in the 4×200 relay.
Again J-D dominated the girls throwing events, going 1-2-3 in the shot put as Hailey Webber winning with 36 feet 2 inches ahead of Jillian Webber’s 33 feet and Kenna Ridzi’s 31′ 10 3/4”.
The weight throw had Hailey Webber go 45 feet to reach the national top 50 and Jillian Webber 40’1 3/4” for second place, with Ridzi (32’6”) getting to fourth place.
Adding to this with a 1-2 finish in the triple jump, the Rams saw Ellyana Deng win with 33’11 3/4”, ahead of the 33’2 3/4” from Nina Autry as Kaleigh Maloof was third (32’1)” for ESM.
On the track, it was Nikki Militi taking the 600 in 1:40.18, running away from teammates Norah Kirch (1:49.46) and Emma Deehan (1:53.48) who were third and fourth, respectively.
Militi was second in the 300 in 42.13 seconds, with Victoria Payne third in 43.05. Deehan had a second-place pole vault 7’6” as ESM’s Elise Mancini tied the Rams’ Brielle Rivera for fifth place.
Nina Autry had a fourth-place long jump of 14’6 1/4”, with Ellyana Deng sixth. Kirch, Meghana Reddy, Abiyah Campbell and Madelyn Murphy were second in the 4×400 relay in 4:29.91 as ESM was fourth in 4:35.95.
ESM got another win from Evanni McDuffie in the 55 sprint, her 7.29 seconds ahead of the 7.38 from Central Square’s Alyssa Costello as Payne was third in 7.56 and Anaharie Anderson (7.81) in fourth place.
Also, Rachael Ladd, in 3:21.53, claimed a win in the 1,000, while Arianna Brennen claimed the high jump by clearing 5’3” to beat the 5-foot leap from Deng, also finishing fourth in the shot put as Gianna Brilbeck was fifth.
Brennen added a second in the 55 hurdles in 9.31 seconds over the 9.90 from Anderson and 9.96 from Kaleigh Maloof in the next two spots.
Winning the 4×800, the Spartans had Ladd, Rachael Burt, Laila Thomas and Adriana Pena go 10:56.90 to hold off Central Square’s 10:57.09, with J-D third in 11:05.43. McDuffie, Anderson, Maloof and Amber Hayes won the 4×200 in 1:49.38 to beat out the Rams’ 1:50.66 in the runner-up spot.
Rachael Burt was second in the 1,500-meter run in 5:21.34 and third in the 3,000 in 11:38.92, with J-D’s Molly McIntyre and Megan O’Malley fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 3,000 and Ladd fifth in the 1,500.
