SYRACUSE – Indoor track and field athletes from Marcellus and Skaneateles would both gain victories in individual and relay events during Wednesday’s Section III Class B-2 championships at SRC Arena.
The boys Mustangs had 101 points, second only to Cazenovia’s winning 128, as the Lakers were fifth and Solvay sixth. It was Skaneateles finishing third in the girls meet with 80 points, with Marcellus fourth and Solvay again in sixth place.
Winning twice in relays, the Mustangs had Xander Szalach, Paul Swenson, Joe Striffler and Andrew McCaffrey go 3:39.92 to take the 4×400, with Solvay fourth in 3:54.66.
Later, in the 4×200, Ethan Snyder joined Szalach, Swenson and McCaffrey to win in 1:38,52, the only time under 1:40. Solvay got third place in 1:42.20 thanks to Jaysin Bliss, Sam Gonzalez, Olek Matysuk and Tristain Hawley. Gonzalez later took fifth in the triple jump.
Snyder also won the 55-meter dash, his 6.92 the only time under seven seconds, with Owen Alexander second in the 55 hurdles in 8.82 seconds and Lukas Grieb fourth in 9.24.
In the pole vault, McCaffrey was second, clearing 10 feet but with more misses than Cazenovia’s Killian Blouin. Ian Potter recorded a third-place long jump of 18’3” and Striffler was third in the triple jump with 37’1 1/2” as Szalach had a fourth-place high jump of 5’6”.
Liam Eldridge was fifth and Nate Alexander sixth in the 3,200, the Mustangs taking third in the 4×800 relay in 9:34.16 as Skaneateles (9:44.77) beat Solvay (9:51.77) for fourth place.
Will Feeney paced Skaneateles, sweeping the throwing events as his weight throw of 54′ 3/4” put him in the state top 25, with Solvay’s Dylan Mumford third with 43’2 1/4” and Anthony McCormick (39 feet) fifth.
Feeney also claimed the shot put thanks to a throw of 46 feet, with Marcellus’ Cam Sadler (38’10 1/2”) beating Scott Hall (38’3”) for second place, Solvay getting Mumford in fourth place and Jayden Jones in fifth place.
The Lakers’ Max Paciorek prevailed in the 300 in a personal-best 38.16 seconds as Striffler was third in 38.86. Ethan Goldberger went 1:35.28 in the 600-meter run for fourth place.
To lead the Skaneateles girls, Kyla Palmer went 41.02 seconds for another victory in the 300, more than three seconds ahead of the field.
Maddie Wright won the high jump, clearing 5 feet as no one else topped 4’10”, while Mara Stanton claimed the weight throw, going 41’11” to place in the state top 25 as Alice Spaulding was third with 32’7 1/4” and Solvay’s Emily Rolince (31’9”) was fourth.
Palmer added a second in the 55 sprint in 7.74 seconds. Allie Springer was third in the 600 in 1:51.83. Palmer, Gianna Caraccio, Savaria Lombardi and Maddie Wright were second in the 4×200 in 1:55.76, with Marcelllus (2:01.57) fifth.
Also, the Lakers were third in the 4×400 in 4:38.78 as Solvay was sixth, with Skaneateles fourth in the 4×800 in 11:14.82.
For the Marcellus girls, Sophia Maum pulled away and took the 3,000-meter run in 11:28.94, while Bailey Ellis, with a shot put toss of 29’8”, beat the 28’3” from Spaulding in third place as Stanton was fifth.
The Mustangs’ Anella Bolster got second in the triple jump with 33’4 1/4”, a new personal mark, and had a third-place long jump of 15’9 1/2”.
Sophia Bianchi got sixth place in the 55 hurdles, posting 9.87 seconds as Solvay’s Rachel Willsey was third in 9.75 to go with a fifth in the long jump. Tessy Huntley took fifth in the weight throw with 28’7”.
