CENTRAL NEW YORK – Despite a great regular season where it has already captured the Onondaga High School League Liberty division title, the Jordan-Elbridge wrestling team did not take part in last week’s Section III Division II Dual Meet.
Instead, as Central Valley Academy would eventually roll to another Dual Meet title, the Eagles had its own busy slate including last Wednesday’s match against Baldiwnsville, where it lost to the Bees 36-27.
Starting at 132 pounds, J-E won four straight bouts. Dylan Nolan pinned Michael Spinner in 90 seconds as Bryce Mahoney, at 138 pounds, took a 12-10 thriller over Arthur Chappell
Jack Lamson moved up to 145 pounds and pinned Michael Fults early in the second period as Henry Smith won a tense 152-pound bout with Olu Gbengbe 2-0.
However, B’ville took every bout from 160 to 215 pounds and won in three of the four highest weight classes, too, the lone execption Liam Mantell (110 pounds) topping Brennan Kline 9-3. Drake Allen, at 160 pounds, took a 5-3 defeat to Davian McLeod.
Before this, the Eagles finished 10th in a high-quality 17-team field in the Jan. 13 Robert Bradshaw Invitational at Canandaigua,
J-E had Lamson reach the title bout at 138 thanks to a 7-2 decision over Cody Quick (Palmyra-Macedon), only to lose the final 4-2 to Alexander’s Ben Merrill.
Angelo Turo (189 pounds) and Lucas Witter (110) both had fourth-place finishes, Turo close in a 6-5 loss to Waterloo’s Hunter Worden as Smith was sixth at 145 after an 8-5 semifinal loss to Pal-Mac’s Mateo Sloan.
Back on Jan. 14, Marcellus finished eighth out of 17 teams in the Dan Wickham Classic at Unatego, the Mustangs’ led again by Colin Scherer.
Wrestling at 126, Scherer pinned Michael Caruso (New Hartford) in the semifinals and then got a pin on Unatego’s Abdul Zaggout in the championship round, both pins taking place in the first period.
Trevor Rankin was fourth at 132, barely getting beat in his consolation bracket final as Adirondack’s Brandon Sanderson topped him 5-3 in the consolation bracket final with an overtime takedown.
West Genesee wrestled last Tuesday against Auburn and rolled past the Maroons 66-11, helped in no small part by seven forfeits that amounted to 42 of the Wildcats’ points.
Still, Dylan Radcliffe, at 132, pinned Briant Sherman in 22 seconds, with Jacob Severson (160) getting a 25-second fall over Gavin Walsh and Austin Fesinger (102 pounds) pinning Brandy Maneri in 42 seconds. Elliott Petrie, at 138, got his pin over Connor Barrigar in 55 seconds.
Two nights later, WG took a 42-29 defeat to Section V’s Victor, seeing the Blue Devils sweep all four of the higher weight classes at the outset to build a 24-0 edge before Austin Fesinger took a forfeit.
Logan Willis had the Wildcats’ first mat win at 126, getting a 15-0 technical fall over Ryan VanWyck. In just 36 seconds, Radcliffe pinned Gerald Decker, with Petrie pinning Travis Wagner in 88 seconds and Maxx Fesinger getting his fall over Eric Knapp in the second period.
WG then recorded a second-place finish in Saturday’s Fallen Heroes Tournament at Canastota, where it only was topped by newly-crowned sectional Division I Dual Meet champion Cicero-North Syracuse 54-19.
Otherwise, the Wildcats handled Cazenovia 57-18, routed East Syracuse Minoa 59-18, held off Baldwinsville 44-30 and concluded with a 36-33 win over the hosts from Canastota. Willis won all four of his matches on the mat, with Maxx Fesinger going 3-0 as Radcliffe and Jack Wade (152) both had 3-2 marks.
J-E went 3-2 during Saturday’s Denny Wright Duals at Homer, taking a 51-21 loss to the host Trojans and falling 42-33 to BGAH, but defeating Sidney 57-18, getting away from Sherburne-Earlville 48-27 and routing APW/Pulaski 51-15.
