CENTRAL NEW YORK – Heading into a pivotal match against SCAC Metro Division-leading Cicero-North Syracuse on Wednesday night, the Baldwinsville wrestling team does have some momentum from back-to-back wins.
Back on Dec. 28, the Bees pulled off a rare shutout against visiting Oswego, the 65-0 win over the Buccaneers involving just five bouts decided on the mat.
Keagan Hayes, pinning Antonio Rivera-Gonzalez in the second period at 138 pounds, began a run where Olu Gbengbe (145 pounds) and Davian McLeod (152 pounds) also got second-period falls over, respectively, John Delconte and Kevin Gregory.
A bit later, Nathan Cali, at 172 pounds, pinned Oswego’s Garrett Perkins with five seconds left, and Aaron Fredenburg (189 pounds) got an 18-3 technical fall over Hayden Sanders.
Forfeits went to Judson Ferris (215 pounds), Brady Lescenski (160 pounds), Michael Spinner (132 pounds), Collin Zeman (126 pounds), Brennan Kline (110 pounds) and Cael Bruce (102 pounds).
B’ville then hosted the Larry Brown JV Tournament on Dec. 29 before the varsity Bees returned to the mat for Wednesday’s non-league match at Morrisville-Eaton.
Here, it was close all the way through, but M-E prevailed 39-34, clinching it in the next-to-last bout at 138 where Hayes was pinned by Shawn Murray.
The Warriors started with a 15-0 edge that included an active bout at 172, where Lescenski took Cameron Winn to overtime before a takedown by Winn decided it, 14-12.
Right after, Fredenburg pinned Gabe Gillis in 52 seconds to get the Bees on the board, and Ferris pinned Tim Eaton in the third period.
When Bruce and Kline both got second-period pins over, respectively, Wyatt Hitchcock and Jacob Jones, B’ville led 24-21. Howver, two pins and a forfeit by M-E turned it around again, negating Spinner’s 13-2 win over Greg Dake and a forfeit to Michael Fults at 145.
B’ville has a big meet next Wednesday against SCAC Metro Division-leading Cicero-North Syracuse before it competes in Saturday’s Cazenovia Invitational.
