Baldwinsville boys swimmers earn win at West Genesee

Late comeback by Bees secures 98-85 victory over Wildcats

CAMILLUS – It’s taken a lot of work and dedication, but the Baldwinsville boys swim team now has the kind of roster depth that can work in head-to-head meets against similar opponents.

The Bees displayed this in Thursday night’s meet at West Genesee, where it trailed early but, with a string of top finishes throughout the latter stages, was able to rally to beat the Wildcats 98-85.

Early in the meet, Mikey White and Matt Lange went 1-2 in the 50-yard freestyle, White prevailing in 22.59 seconds and Lange second in 24.17 after Alex Nicita won the 200 freestyle in 1:59.49 and Lucas Clay took the 200 individual medley in 2:18.46.

Even with that, the Bees trailed 41-34 heading into the 100 butterfly where, with another top-two sweep, Ben Webster, in 1:00.81, edged the 1:01.93 from Lange.

Then Jayden Miranda took second in the 500 freestyle in 5:45 flat before a 200 freestyle relay where Danny Sima and Treygan St. John joined Nicita and White to win in 1:39.77 as Webster, Lange, Keenan Smith and Marco VanCour were second in 1:42.16.

Nicita took second (1:06.46) and Miranda third (1:07.32) in the 100 backstroke, with Colin Szkotak fourth in 1:08.48 as Smith made his way to second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.36.

And to clinch the victory, Szkotak joined Lange, Clay and Webster for a 400 freestyle relay where the Bees finished in 3:41.38, just beating out the 3:43.43 from WG’s quartet of Ryan Goshow, Angus Tarolli, Matt Keiling and Gavin Flanagan.

After the holiday break, B’ville will have two home meets in a 48-hour span Jan. 3 and 5 against Cicero-North Syracuse and Oswego, weather permitting.
