LIVERPOOL – Area high school boys swimming is underway again, with Cicero-North Syracuse enthused about its chances to climb up the Class A ladder and Liverpool determined to restore some of its past glory.
In Liverpool’s case, the season-opening meet against visiting Oswego went quite well as the Warriors piled up points in a 97-54 victory over the Buccaneers.
Three different Liverpool swimmers had the top times in two individual events, including Nate Alexander, who went one minute, 56.78 seconds to take the 200-yard freestyle and then rolled to a victory in the 500 freestyle in 5:15.71.
Trevor Selig emerged as a standout in the sprints, needing just 23.14 seconds to take the 50 freestyle and then going 52.23 in the 100 freestyle to beat out Sean O’Neil’s 54.81 and James Hayden’s 57.31.
Jack Cavallerano would swim the 100 butterfly in 54.99 seconds and then, in the 100 backstroke, break the one-minute mark, too, beating the field there in 59.90.
Joe Lisi, second in the 100 backstroke to Cavallerano, had the top time of 2:12.50 in the 200 individual medley, part of a 1-2-3 sweep with Hayden (2:20.38) and Ryan Gublo (2:25.81). Collin Gridley earned 219.85 points on the diving board.
Liverpool was also impressive in the 200 freestyle relay, where Selig, Hayden, Lisi and Solomon Panayil went 1:38.30 and, just behind them, Cavallerano, Alexander, O’Neil and Collin White posted 1:38.49.
Gublo, in 1:14.39, edged Panayil (1:14.45) in the 100 breaststroke before Cavallerano, Selig, Alexander and White closed out the meet by going 3:48.23 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Two days before Liverpool swims at Baldwinsville next Thursday night, C-NS, who will again have home meets at Nottingham High School, opens its season at Fulton.
