CENTRAL NEW YORK – With its two matches against Baldwinsville its only blemishes, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls volleyball team has managed to take out everyone else in the SCAC Metro division.
That includes Cicero-North Syracuse, whom the Hornets beat last Tuesday night in four sets. After winning the opener 25-15, F-M lost a close second set 25-21, but was able to pull away in each of the third and fourth sets by equal 25-19 margins.
Zoe Myint had 38 assists and 13 digs, helped on the back line by Kaylene Nobel, who earned 12 digs to go with her 19 kills. Kalyna Dannenberg had a big night, too, with 13 kills and nine digs as Lena Hansen, Rebekah Beasley and Hannah Williamson had three kills apiece.
F-M then routed Nottingham 25-5, 25-15, 25-14 on Thursday night with 17 aces from eight different players. Myint (who had 13 assists) and Emily Pollard got three aces apiece, with Williamson earning a team-best four kills and Gretchen Stoppacher earning seven digs to go with three kills and two aces.
Jamesville-DeWitt improved to 7-3 in last Tuesday’s match against Oswego, where it won the first set 25-21, dropped the second 25-22 but then put away the Buccaneers 25-14 in the third and 25-21 in a tense fourth set.
Cadence Milligan, with her 23 assists, passed it to a variety of players. Merris Kessler had six kills and four blocks, with Aaliyah Anderson also getting four blocks as Claire Trevisani had five kills. Zamora McBride (11 digs), Grace Lore (10 digs) and Yeva Balayan (eight digs) all played well on defense.
But the Red Rams had a setback Thursday against Central Square, splitting the first two sets but then dropping close third and fourth sets to the Redhawks in a 25-23, 21-25, 25-22, 25-20 defeat.
Trevisani got 13 kills, helped by Kessler (seven kills) and Anderson, who had five aces to go with her six kills. Milligan got 30 assists as McBride and Lore both earned 15 digs and Sophia Zoghby added 10 digs.
Bishop Grimes made quite a comeback in last Tuesday night’s five-set win over Hamilton.
The first two sets were split, each by 25-22 margins, and the Emerald Knights also took the third set in another 25-22 decision and got within range of a match win in the fourth.
Somehow, the Cobras absorbed this, pulled out the set 27-25, and then went back and forth in the final set, too, before defeating Hamilton 16-14 to win it.
Tori Coppola amassed 38 assists, seven aces and 12 digs, with Tori Sikorrski earning 34 digs. Avery Burnette got 15 kills and 12 digs, with Kayla Duenkel earning 10 kills, Hannah Kinne eight kills and Saba Fasama seven kills. Remy Cleland earned 20 digs and Kinne got 10 digs.
Grimes then swept Syracuse Academy of Science 25-15, 25-12, 25-16 on Thursday, improving its overall record to 5-6 as Sikorski got seven aces, Kinne had seven kills and Coppola earned 14 assists.
