CENTRAL NEW YORK – Both the East Syracuse Minoa and Jamesville-DeWitt boys soccer teams continued their strong early-season play in advance of Tuesday night’s key early-season showdown.
Up against Fulton last Tuesday night, the state Class A no. 20-ranked Spartans were steady and relentless, wearing down the Red Raiders’ defenses and picking up a 5-0 victory.
Evan deBerjeois led a well-balanced ESM attack, scoring twice. Anthony Ciotti, Ben Richardson and Ibrahim Husakovic had one goal apiece, Ciotti joining Henry Callahan, Justin Oakley and Parker Fero in the assist column.
Good as this was, ESM saved up even more firepower for Thursday’s game with Oswego, getting to double digits and beyond in an 11-0 romp over the Buccaneers.
Joel Alvarez emerged again and netted four goals. Huakovic scored twice, with Jackson Tedesco and Evan Nielsen both earning one goal and one assist. Amrin Osmanoivc had two assists as Joe Federico, Stephen Winans and Sumit Kadariya also found the net.
By far, though, ESM’s most satisfying effort was Saturday’s come-from-behind, 4-3 win over state Class A no. 14-ranked Vestal, from Section IV.
Almost by himself, Alvarez led the Spartans’ comeback, converting twice as a 2-0 deficit turned into a 3-3 tie, Anel Suljic also converting off a long throw from Callahan.
Then, in overtime, Alvarez fired a 25-yard shot into the net for a “golden goal” game-winner and a hat trick.
As for J-D, it had won three in a row to open the season and then made it four straight against Cortland last Tuesday, shutting out the Purple Tigers 3-0.
The Red Rams’ defense held Cortland to one shot in a third consecutive shutout as, on the other end, Kyan Barbuto, T.J. Brackett and T.J. Tanner picked up goals, with assists credited to Alessia Vega and Connor Burns.
A closer match came on Wednesday, against PSLA-Fowler, but the Red Rams edged the Falcons 1-0 as Brackett, off a feed from Tanner, put in the game’s only goal and Sam Allen, with his six saves, kept the Falcons from answering.
J-D played again a day later and blanked Cazenovia 5-0, with the five goals coming from five different players – Barbuto, Tanner, Vega, Kai Brutsaert and Emile Antoine, with Tanner, Ian McIntyre, Mark Bratslavsky and Tanner O’Hayer picking up assists.
Humbled by a Sept. 9 loss to West Genesee, Fayetteville-Manlius began what it hoped to be a climb back to the top of the SCAC Metro division standings
The Hornets took out some frustration on Corcoran last Tuesday, prevailing 10-2 as Nick Donnelly tacked on four goals, giving him nine for the season.
Aiden Burke added two goals, with Evan Terreri getting a goal and assist. Tyler Goodman had three assists as Andrew Nocily, Tyler Koehne and Sam Razmjou also found the net. Jacob Mohammed added an assist.
F-M then took a trip to Liverpool on Saturday afternoon and, with one of its best all-around efforts so far, shut down the Warriors on the way to a 2–0 victory.
Pacing itself in summer-like conditions, the Hornets netted one goal in each half, with Terreri and Sam Duncanson finding the net. Both helped to overcome seven saves by Liverpool goalie Jacob McQuatters.
