CENTRAL NEW YORK – Over a stretch of two weeks, area high school boys and girls golfers would both battle for league and Section III honors and see whether they would proceed to June’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournaments.
Three local girls teams would tee it up last Wednesday at Woodcrest Golf Club for the Onondaga High School League championships, with Westhill not quite able to back up its regular-season title with a post-season victory.
However, Catherine Dadey was an impressive individual champion. Shooting an 89 for 18 holes, she was seven shots better than Christian Brothers Academy’s Grace Catalano to take medalist honors.
Team-wise, Westhill had 414, second to CBA’s winning total of 389 as Skaneateles made it to third place with 459 and Marcellus was fourth with 471.
The Lakers had Jillian Scott tie for 10th with a 106 as Lili Winkelman finished 12th at 110 and Chloe Corbett, with a 119, finished in 19th place.
Allison Coombs led the Mustangs, her 100 putting her alone in fifth place, while Genevieve Formoza was 15th with a 116. Behind Dadey, Westhill’s May Wollen tied Scott, shooting 106, beating out the 113 from Hannah Johnston and the 117 from Charlotte Roth.
In league matches that followed, Marcellus edged Cazenovia 202-206, the Lakers getting three of the top four secores except for a 45 from Coombs, but Genevieve Formoza, with a 50, leading a five-player charge that included a 52 from Miranda Stewart and 55 from Claire Curtin.
Up against each other Thursday, Marcellus beat Skaneateles 214-253, with Stewart’s 49 at Tuscarora beating out a 51 from Coombs. Genevieve Formoza added a 55 and Isabella Formoza a 59 to match Avery Ide, the Lakers’ low score. Chloe Corbett got a 62 ahead of Scott and Reese McConohy both shooting 66.
West Genesee was at home last Tuesday, falling 204-243 to Fayetteville-Manlius White. Sophia Simiele shot a wind-swept 54 at Westvale, but four Hornets beat that total, led by Lucia Melfi’s 48, the only score under 50.
Then, against Cicero-North Syracuse Blue on Wednesday, WG lost, 178-252, Simiele’s 57 at Westvale not close to the top-four Northstars who were led by Jessica Ricciardi and Isabella Borte each shooting 41.
But the Wildcats did beat C-NS Green 221-232, led by Simiele’s 49 and boosted further by Olivia Snyder shooting a 56. Madalyn Lauricella and Analiese Straub both finished with 58s.
A rematch with C-NS Blue Thursday at Northern Pines saw WG lose 183-225, again with Simiele at the forefront thanks to her 51 but topped by four Northstars, led by Ricciardi’s 42.
Undefeated again in the regular season, the Marcellus boys team would fare quite well on May 14 at the OHSL Patriot division tournament at the Pompey Club, posting four of the top 10 scores.
That included John White, who won individual honors with a three-over-par 75, beating out his teammate, Will Glass, who posted a 78. Ben Reome, with a 95, and Justin Heath, with a 99, also broke 100.
Following up on Thursday, Marcellus won 229-252 over Bishop Ludden on Thursday, Glass and White both shooting 41 and Williams a 48 to equal the Gaelic Knights’ low total by Max Boyea. Andrew Towsley added a 49.
Back at the league tournament, Ludden saw Towsley stand out, shooting a 79 to finish third behind White and Glass. Phil McGarvey, with a 96, was alone in sixth place, while Boyea got seventh place with a 98.
Solvay swept two opponents last Tuesday, shooting 240 to edge Pulaski’s 248 and finish well clear of Altmar-Parish-Williamstown’s 329.
And this leads to the sectional tournaments, with the girls competing Tuesday at Kanon Valley and the boys having its state qualifier, featuring players from the fall season, on Wednesday and Friday at Skenandoa Club (Barker Brook) in Clinton.
