CENTRAL NEW YORK – Buoyed by a 7-1 start, the Jordan-Elbridge softball team entered the first state Class B rankings of May, checking in at the no. 24 spot.
When game action resumed, the Eagles would get tested at Chittenango last Tuesday but were able to earn a 7-5 victory over the Bears.
They traded runs in the second inning, J-E scoring twice to go up 2-1, and in the third the Eagles struck for four runs, only to have Chittenango counter with a four-run rally of its own.But J-E kept the Bears quiet the rest of the way.
As a follow-up on Thursday afternoon, the Eagles took on Phoenix and kept the Firebirds off the board, rolling to an 8-0 victory to move to 9-1 at the season’s midway point.
Solvay entered the week 3-4, but lost last Monday to Phoenix 7-3 as the Firebirds were able to score runs in each of the first five innings. Jenna Wing went three-for-four and scored twice for the Bearcats, while Susie Overend had two hits as she and Delaney Kaszubinski both had RBIs.
Another setback came on Tuesday with an 8-7 defeat to Altmar-Parish-Williamstown where the Bearcats scored five runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth to erase an early 3-0 deficit.
Yet even with Kaszubinski’s double, single and three RBIs, plus two RBIs from Overend, Annabelle Stewart could not hold the lead, APW getting three runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth to tie it, 7-7, before plating the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Skaneateles took an 11-10 defeat to Christian Brothers Academy last Tuesday despite three hits and three runs scored from Ayla Pas’cal and two hits apiece from Laci Gaidis and Natalie Yokom as Katie Combs joined Gaidis and Yokom in the RBI column.
Recovering well from this wild affair, Skaneateles dominated Thursday’s game with Hannibal, smashing the Warriors 20-5 largely on the basis of a 10-run second inning plus four runs in the first and fourth innings. A 7-2 win over Weedsport followed on Friday afternoon, moving the Lakers’ record to 5-7.
Solvay, meanwhile, faced CBA and took an early 9-1 lead, only to have the Brothers score four times in the third inning and five runs in each of the ensuing three innings to beat the Bearcats 20-10.
Natalie Orr went three-for-four with three RBIs to lead Solvay as Jenna Wing scored three times. For CBA, Mackenzie Witz hit two home runs as she and Avery Bowman each got five RBIs.
