The April school break saw the Marcellus softball team test itself against elite competition in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, this after seeing two early-season games postponed by bad weather.
In its first game there after a pair of scrimmages, the Mustangs lost, 5-4, to Chesterfield, nearly rallying from a 5-0 deficit as it pulled within one and had the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the seventh inning before falling short. Emma MacLachlan, Bryn Goldsworthy and Brooklyn Finnarty each had one RBI.
A thriller against Wakefield (Virginia) followed and Aubrey Fraher pitched a gem, only allowing two hits as the Mustangs prevailed 1-0 over the Warriors.
Fraher had her control, not surrendering a walk while recording 10 strikeouts. Meanwhile, the Mustangs waited until the sixth inning to get the only run it needed as MacLachlan singled, reached third and scored on Annabella Mondello’s sacrifice fly. Elaine Grattan also had two hits.
One of those Marcellus games was supposed to be against West Genesee, which will get made up May 9.
WG played last Monday against Christian Brothers Academy, the game in doubt until the fifth inning, when the Brothers netted three runs and ultimately prevailed 6-3 over the Wildcats.
Sophia VanHorn had two hits, scored two runs and got a pair of RBIs. Leah Todeschini scored the other run as Mackenzie Witz led CBA with three hits and two RBIs.
WG then lost 12-7 to Central Square, the key sequence for the Redhawks a five-run fifth inning that broke the game open. Anna Drogo still had three hits and four RBIs for the Wildcats as Natalia Chrisjohn drove in a pair of runs.
Jordan-Elbridge had romped past Weedsport 8-1 in its April 8 opener. Three days later, at Hannibal, the Eagles were even more impressive, shutting out the Warriors 11-0 as Ava Hildebrant hit two home runs and got three RBIs, with Riley Hill, Erin LaVancha and Brooke Chiaramonte driving in one run apiece.
Alexis DelFavero pitched five innings and struck out six as she and Abby DelFavero combined to hold Hannibal to four hits. The Eagles scored twice in the first inning, but broke it open with four-run rallies in the fifth and sixth.
Westhill piled up runs last Tuesday in a 21-1 win over Phoenix that broke an early two-game skid, while Solvay ran into Chittenango and lost, 16-1, to a Bears side that used a 10-run second inning to take control.
Rebounding quickly, Solvay prevailed 18-7 over Hannibal on Thursday, plating nine runs in the first inning and then doubling that total in the innings that followed.
Jenna Wing, in particular, broke out with a home run, three doubles and three RBIs. Maggie Kemp also drove in three runs as Hannah Haase added a pair of RBIs. Antoinette Sardo joined Wing in scoring three runs.
Meanwhile, Westhill edged Mexico 8-7, building an 8-2 advantage by the sixth inning and hanging on late as Sydney Bistrovich produced a pair of RBIs, with Hannah Schmitz going three-for-four and scoring three runs.
