CENTRAL NEW YORK – Warmer temperatures during much of the April school break allowed for area high school baseball teams to get in a full slate of games – as long as it stayed dry.
It was both dry and warm when Jamesville-DeWitt, who went 5-11 a season ago and is eager to return to contending form, faced Central Square in a two-game series.
The first game was all Red Rams as it soared past the Redhawks 11-2, thanks to a consistent hitting attack that earned runs in every single inning except the second.
Carter King led the way, getting two RBIs and scoring three runs. Eamon Giblin also drove in a pair of runs as Tyler Kaelin scored twice and Matt Sweeney got an RBI. King also pitched three innings, striking out six as A.J. Sumida did not allow a hit in his four innings on the mound.
Though the second game proved closer, J-D again topped Central Square, this time 7-5 as it led 4-1 early, only to have the Redhawks net four runs in the top of the fifth.
But that 5-4 deficit didn’t last as the Rams, with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, went ahead for good. King had two hits, two walks and two RBIs as Sweeney, Aaron Ko and Jake Ogata each drove in a run. Giblin’s two-inning pitching stint earned him the win.
Christian Brothers Academy went up against Baldwinsville last Thursday in a clash of two reigning Section III champions – the Brothers in Class A, the Bees in Class AA.
B’ville got the best of it, shutting out CBA 7-0. A five-run first inning set the tone as the Bees got to Brothers pitcher Luke Boule.
And though Boule, Ryan Petrie, Will Harrigan and Tom Leskoske pitched well the rest of the way, CBA could not get on the board despite having six hits to B’ville’s four.
East Syracuse Minoa took a 24-0 loss to Cortland in that series opener, with the Purple Tigers netting six runs in the third inning and 10 runs in the fifth, led by Caden Albright’s four RBIs.
It was far closer in Tuesday’s rematch, the Spartans using single runs in the first two innings to grab a 2-0 advantage as Trey Bova drove in Jack Cook and scored, too.
However, Cortland tied it in the bottom of the second and, with nine total runs in the fifth and sixth innings, prevailed 11-2, Caden Congden leading the Purple Tigers with three RBis. Ethan Hay and Andrew Partigianoni drove in two runs apiece.
ESM did score more runs on Wednesday against Westhill and even led 4-2 in the second inning, but the Warriors answered with four runs in the bottom of the second and pulled away to win 17-6. Bova, in defeat, had a pair of RBIs.
In Thursday’s 10-1 loss to Cicero-North Syracuse, the Spartans only managed a fifth-inning run as Tyler Hildreth drove home A.J. Graham. Dan Gilkey picked up a pair of hits as Anthony Testa got five RBIs for the Northstars.
Bishop Grimes was 2-1 going into last Tuesday’s game against Westhill, but lost, 16-1, to a Warriors team that scored four runs in the first and 10 runs in the second to put it away early.
R.J. Benedetto drove home Bruno Kinsey for the Cobras’ lone tally in the first inning. On Westhill’s side, Taden Chester and Tyler Campbell led with three RBIs apiece.
A 17-1 loss to Solvay followed on Wednesday as Grimes surrendered eight runs in the first inning and seven runs in the fourth, only getting the board when Benedetto drove home Kinane in the fifth.
