CENTRAL NEW YORK – Having roared out of the gate with impressive victories, the Jamesville-DeWitt softball team looked to continue that momentum – and did so in large part due to a satisfying come-from-behind win.
Down late in last Thursday’s game against Class AA power Liverpool, the Red Rams saw its bats come alive and pull out a 10-8 victory over the Warriors.
Against a Liverpool side now coached by former J-D mentor Phil DeAugustine, the Rams fell behind 5-0 before getting on the board with four runs in the top of the sixth inning.
The Warriors countered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth,, but in the top of the seventh J-D batted around against Liverpool ace Cassie Wiggins, getting six runs to take the lead.
Emily Bulone, Emily White and Kiara McMahon each scored twice in the comeback, with Miriam Zoghby doubling and scoring a run. Sophia Zoghby, Stella White and Amanda Aitken also plated runs.
Prior to that, J-D got its second consecutive shutout when it routed Central Square 10-0 last Monday, McMahon holding the Redhawks to just four hits in seven innings.
It was only 2-0 when the Rams scored eight times in the last three innings. McMahon and Kate Dorazio both had three hits, with Bella Sindoni driving in three runs as Aitken and Emma White and Amanda Aitken got two hits apiece.
That same day, East Syracuse Minoa earned a tough 8-6 victory over Chittenango to improve to 2-1, the whole game turning when the Spartans, trailing the Bears 3-1, erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Sara Brefka had two RBIs. Brooke Kilpatrick singled twice, doubled and scored two runs as Ava Burry also scored twice, joining winning pitcher Olivia Goff, Jaylianna Sabatino and Maddison Jewett with one RBI apiece.
As a follow-up, ESM, in its own game against Central Square, prevailed 8-5, using a five-run first inning to overcome a quick 2-0 deficit and adding the rest of its runs in the next two innings.
Maya Boots posted three RBIs and Brefka had two RBIs as the pair each got two hits, matching Kirkpatrick and Natalie Quonce. Goff and Madalynn Ryan each drove in a run.
Then the Spartans rolled past Syracuse City 14-1 on Wednesday with Kirkpatrick netting a home run, double, single and four RBIs. Ransom doubled and drove in three runs as Quonce got three hits and a pair of RBIs.
Christian Brothers Academy met up with West Genesee last Monday afternoon, a tight game decided when the Brothers put up three runs in the fifth inning, which made the difference in a 6-3 victory over the Wildcats. Mackenzie Witz went three-for-four and drove in a pair of runs. Hannah Reilly also had two RBIs.
It was far different a day later as CBA bashed Homer 23-2, the Brothers picking up 16 hits on the way to its third consecutive victory.
Fayetteville-Manlius was back in action last Wednesday against Fulton, sweeping a doubleheader from Fulton.
In the first game, a 13-8 victory, the Hornets twice came back, with three runs in the third to erase a 4-1 deficit and then matching Fulton as they each scored four times in the fourth inning.
Then F-M broke the 8-8 tie with a decisive five-run rally in the fifth as Gracie Bishop tripled, doubled twice and added a single as Emily Wilson got a single and two doubles. Paige Graves scored three runs, with Lily Fowler, Natalie Mayne and Megan Woodridge each crossing the plate twice.
The second game was a 16-0, five-inning shutout that included 21 hits, three each by Woodridge, Graves, Mayne, Julianna Hall and Avery Howe as Howe produced three RBIs and Fowler drove in a pair of runs.
This made F-M’s 14-4 loss to Whitesboro on Thursday a bit easier to take, Woodridge getting three hits and an RBI, but the Warriors scoring seven runs in the second inning and six runs in the fourth to get away.
