CENTRAL NEW YORK – Inching closer to an undefeated regular season, the Jamesville-DeWitt/Christian Brothers Academy boys swim team improved to 9-0 last Friday with a 71-53 victory over Auburn.
Here, Nathaniel Wales provided a highlight when, in the 100-yard backstroke, he tore to a time of 55.20 seconds, close to the state qualifying standard of 54.82 as Wales also won the 50 freestyle in 23.57 seconds.
Misha Kubanov, already headed to the state meet in the 500 freestyle, went 5:02.16 in that event as Bobby Diel posted 5:26.98, with Kubanov also first in the 200 freestyle in 1:55.71.
A close 200 individual medley had Lesha Kubanov, in 2:14.51, edging Luke Marino’s 2:17.30 as, in the 100 freestyle, Marino, in 53.95 seconds, was a close second to the 53.42 from the Maroons’ Riley Fitzgerald.
To open the meet, Wales, Kubanov, Diel and Mark Bratslavsky went 1:46.48 in the 200 medley, a prelude to a 200 freestyle relay where Bratslavsky joined Matt Cappella, George Theobald and Matt Radford to win in 1:47.34. Diel posted a 100 breaststroke time of 1:17.22 as Malcolm Britz went 1:06 flat, uncontested, in the 100 butterfly.
Of course, the big obstacle for J-D/CBA remains ahead as, on Friday, the Red Rams have its showdown with Fayetteville-Manlius at Cazenovia College.
F-M had not competed in a head-to-head meet since Dec. 14, when it beat Oswego. Inthe month that followed, four contests against New Hartford, Pulaski, Auburn and Fulton all were postponed.
Only now did the Hornets return to the pool for competition, doing so last Friday against Syracuse City and easily earning a 102-73 victory.
Quinn Smith led the way, going 2:05.25 to prevail in the 200 IM and then swimming the 500 freestyle in 5:12.48 as Jason Porter was second in 5:24.10.
Porter, in 1:57.06, beat out Eddie Elliott (1:59.40) in the 200 freestyle as Eli Kligerman won the 100 butterfly, his 1:05.17 just ahead of Cooper Hughes’ 1:06.15 as ZachMangoba won the 100 backstroke in 1:08.94.
Connor Gleasman accumulated 251.50 points to win in diving as Porter, Elliott, Kligerman and Hughes teamed to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.32. Smith returned in the 400 freestyle relay, helping Porter, Ben Matthews and Lincoln Buelow finish in 3:52.50.
