CENTRAL NEW YORK – A busy stretch of area high school wrestling is set to include, over the next pair of Tuesday nights, two showdowns between Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse.
Aside from their regular-season meeting on the Northstars’ mat, the two rivals will gather again in the home of the Warriors in the 4 vs. 5 match-up in the Division I championship of the Section III Dual Meet, the winner to take on top seed Indian River in the semifinals.
Liverpool got an up-close look at Indian River when those two sides wrestled Saturday at the Cazenovia Invitational. Overall, Liverpool picked up 82 points to finish eighth in the 16-team field, while IR won the event with 211 points.
Rocco DeGilormo secured a victory at 118 pounds, using an overtime takedown to beat Homer’s Hunter Lines 3-1 in the title bout, while Connor Kral nearly prevailed at 172 points, dropping a close 5-4 final to South Seneca’s Dakota Stewart.
Mohammed Yousuf earned fourth place at 138 pounds, with Tyler Vivacqua fifth at 132 pounds as Samir Amiri (102 pounds) finished sixth. Preston Alonzo (152 pounds) and Kyle Hemmingway (189 pounds) both had seventh-place efforts.
Prior to this, the Warriors had a head-to-head match against Section V’s Greece that it won 54-15 in the Rochester suburbs.
Every bout from 110 to 189 pounds when in Liverpool’s favor, 10 in all, with six of them contested.
Josiah Russel pinned Kory Dutton at 152 pounds, with Owen Atchie doing the same to Tamar Jasper at 160 pounds and Kral pinning Dan Judkins. Yousof got his own fall over Reid Johnson. A close 110-pound bout had Pierce Goodave edging Joe Molica 6-5 as Jonah Geller, at 145 pounds, contained Giancarlo Pickering 8-1.
Also, forfeits were claimed in four other weight classes, with DeGilormo, Vivacqua, Hemmingway and Lucas Smith (126 pound) not having to take the mat.
