CENTRAL NEW YORK – A new year means that area high school wrestling teams are moving into the second half of their respective regular seasons, shaping up for the big meets late in January and in February.
Jamesville-DeWitt/Christian Brothers Academy made its 2022 debut last Tuesday night against Cortland and, claiming all but two of the contested bouts, routed the Purple Tigers 50-9.
Ben Paul had the quickest pin of the night at 215 pounds, taking just 53 seconds to finish off Kollin Raye Dye after a 189-pound bout where Enver Bulatov pinned Luke Darling in 73 seconds.
Nathan Finn (126 pounds) and Garrett Williams (145 pounds) both had 76-second falls over, respectively, Devlin Riotto and Karter Bush, with Mason Porter (138 pounds) pinning DeSean West in the second period and Jordyn Hill, at 118 pounds, getting a last-second pin over Zach Price.
Elsewhere, Gerald Vielhauer, at 152 pounds, won a 16-1 technical fall over Wyatt Tinker as heavyweight Cameron Beecher shut out Asher Tinker 5-0 and Leonardo Tallarico (172 pounds) claimed a forfeit.
This followed a Dec. 29 appearance in the large Windsor Christmas Tournament, where J-D/CBA finished 16th in a 36-team field with 43.5 points.
None of the Rams’ wrestlers made it to the top four, but Bulatov was able to take sixth place at 189, a finish that Matthew Dougherty equaled at 102 pounds.
Moving to last Saturday’s Leo J. Sammon Tournament, J-D/CBA rose to third place in a 17-team field with 138.5 points, just behind runner-up Camden (138.5) as host Central Valley Academy won with 175 points.
Bulatov got to the finals at 189, only to get pinned in the third period by Dolgeville’s Jared Bilinski as Paul, moving up to 215, was also in the title bout and also got pinned, by Watertown’s Cain Roberts.
In the final at 132 pounds, William BeSeth ran into Copenhagen’s Tavian Camper and was pinned in the second period. Hill was third at 110 pounds, pinning Dylan Cotter (Fonda-Fultonville) in the consolation bracket final as Vielhauer edged CVA’s Cole Wheat 6-5 for third place at 152.
Williams took fourth, as did Beecher, and this finish helped secure for CBA/J-D the no. 2 seed in Division I for next week’s Section III Dual Meet.
Fayetteville-Manlius traveled to Baldwinsville last Wednesday and had all of its success in the lighter weight classes during a 52-18 defeat to the Bees.
At 118 pounds, Harrison Schwab beat Collin Zeman 8-3 as Trent Gloo won a tough 10-6 bout over Michael Spinner at 126. Forfeits went to Paul Cange at 138 and Charles DeShields at 102 pounds.
