WAPPINGERS FALLS -Led by Peter McMahon, the West Genesee boys cross country team exceeded expectations at the Nov. 20 New York State Federation championships.
Held once again at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls, the Federation meet was back on the slate after COVID-19 canceled its 2020 edition.
And McMahon, bent on improving his fifth-place finish at the NYSPHSAA Class A meet a week earlier, did so.
Amid a field of 281, McMahon went exactly 15 minutes, 50 seconds. Only LaSalle Institute’s Gitch Hayes (15:34.7) and Fordham Prep’s Myles Hogan (15:37.8) did better.
From a team standpoint, WG finished with 460 points, putting it 16th out of 30 sides, nearly in the top half.
Michael Gomes, with a time of 18:06.1, was just ahead of Aidan Walsh (18:07.6) and Kevin Moser, who posted 18:07.8. Casey Conmy, in 18:48.3, beat out Max Broccoli (18:54.7) and Connor Moore, who posted 19:07.1.
As this went on, Marcellus senior Caeden Cox pulled off a strong finish, taking 92nd place in 17:35.2 to cap a season that included an individual Section III Class C title.
