CAZENOVIA – In the course of building a five-game win streak, the Cazenovia field hockey team rarely had to worry about late-game stress, especially when it shut out Cato-Meridian, Weedsport and Oneida by a combined 17-0 margin.
That changed, though, when the Lakers hosted Clinton last Tuesday at Burton Street Elementary School and found itself tied before a strong fourth-quarter surge, led by Hadley Schug, produced a 3-1 win over the Warriors.
They traded goals in the opening period, Clinton ending Cazenovia’s shutout streak when Jenna Deep scored off a feed from Gracen Grimm to match Schug’s seventh goal of the season.
Through the second and third quarters, it remained 1-1, the tension building – at least until Schug’s second goal of the day in the fourth quarter put the Lakers ahead for good.
Just to be sure, Schug converted again late to complete the hat trick as Sophie Clancy twice picked up assists and Sammy Sparks added an assist. Cazenovia’s defense held Clinton to just four shots overall.
This is the busiest week of the Lakers’ regular season. Between visits from Port Byron/Union Springs and Cato-Meridian and an appearance in Camden’s O’Connor Classic on the weekend, the Lakers will play four times in five days.
