CENTRAL NEW YORK – With cooler weather close at hand, each of the area’s high school boys golf teams entered their final week of the regular season following a wide range of results.
West Genesee Gold tried to break out of a mid-season slump in last Monday’s match against Liverpool, and did so with a 188-199 victory over the Warriors.
Connor Christie’s 36 at Westvale edged out the 37 from Liverpool’s Kyle Kirkby. Then Owen Zoanetti posted a 38, equaled by the Warriors’ Brad Cole and Owen Michaud, with Joe Snyder’s 40 and Cameron Hotaver’s 41 helping the Wildcats go in front for good.
Meanwhile, West Genesee Blue went to Northern Pines last Monday and, fueled by a top-five sweep, knocked off Cicero-North Syracuse Green 215-241.
Ashton Fassinger and Logan Christopher, both shooting 42, led a well-balanced effort. Jason Clifton and Jake Einich both posted 43 as Brady Smith’s 45 topped the 46s from C-NS Green’s Joe DeGroat and Austin Mazzoli.
Back at Westvale a day later, WG Blue made it back-to-back wins by edging Fayetteville-Manlius White 209-213.
Max DeMass led the way this time, his 39 one ahead of Anthony Pirro’s 40 and both of them ahead of the 41s from the Hornets’ Andrew Ahn and Dylan Friedman. Nick Stemkoski’s 43 matched that of Max Walker, and Smith improved to a 44 as Clifton shot a 45.
All of this led to WG Gold and WG Blue meeting each other on Friday, with the older Wildcats keeping the younger ones from a third straight win by a 190-213 margin.
Ryan Till shot 37, edging out a trio of 38s from Christie, Ben Glass and Max Lauricella. Snyder shot a 39 as DeMass and Clifton both posted 41 ahead of a 42 from Walker, a 44 from Smith and a 45 from Fassinger.
Before rains interrupted late-week schedules, Westhill rolled past Phoenix 204-281last Tuesday at Beaver Meadows. Aidan Ryan led the Warriors with a 38, two ahead of Anthony Maglisco’s 40. Grady Pens had a 41 as Danny Young shot a 42 and Luke Gilmartin added a 43.
Skaneateles took a narrow 221-223 defeat to Homer last Tuesday at Skaneateles Country Club, with a tie at the top as Jack Marquardt’s 39 matched that of the Trojans’ Mitch Riter.
Tyson DiRubbo was third with a 42, with Shawn Luce adding a 45. However, four Homer golfers shot between 43 and 47 ahead of the 48 from Henry Major and a 49 from Will Cowden.
Rebounding on Friday, Skaneateles handled Jordan-Elbridge 225-286 as DiRubbo’s 39 led all individuals. Marquardt shot 41, with Luce getting a 42 and Cowden a 44 ahead of the 48 by J-E’s Colin Jewsbury. Ben Weller had a 55 and laurel Jones a 58 for the Eagles.
