CENTRAL NEW YORK – Though it has found a fair amount of success this fall, the Cazenovia girls volleyball team still finds itself chasing the powerhouses of the Onondaga High School League Liberty division.
One such instance of this was last Monday’s match at Westhill, where the Lakers never got close in any of the three sets of a 25-13, 25-12, 25-16 defeat to the Warriors.
Westhill got 27 assists from Ava Baty, who fed it to Kate Heinrich (12 kills) and Alison Lancette (eight kills).
This, along with the postponement of last Wednesday’s match against Hannibal, followed the Lakers’ Sept. 16 match against Jordan-Elbridge.
Having dropped the opening set 25-18, Cazenovia got the second set 25-17. It went back and forth again, the Eagles claiming the third set 25-19 but the Lakers grabbing the fourth set 25-16.
J-E then rolled in the final set 25-14 to claim the match, though Carleigh Szalach and Maren Smith both earned 12 kills as Smith added three aces. Caryn Gagnon contributed 17 assists, four kills and four aces .
For the victorious Eagles, Sarah Lane got 17 assists for the Eagles, passing it to Gabby Smart, who had nine kills, and Sydney Parsons, who had eight kills.
The Hannibal match will get made up Oct. 5 after a week where the Lakers would go to Institute of Technology Central and Skaneateles before hosting Phoenix.
