CENTRAL NEW YORK – Back in the fall, Alex Moesch was the lead figure in the Cazenovia boys golf team’s strong regular-season effort, the Lakers winning eight of its 11 matches.
But it was not until Monday that Moesch and his Cazenovia teammates were able to finish the season, taking part in the small-school portion of the Section III championships.
Since close to 200 golfers qualified for the sectional event, it was split in two, with Cazenovia and other small schools going to Barker Brook Golf Club in Oriskany Falls as the large schools competed at Colgate University’s Seven Oaks course.
As a team, Cazenovia fared quite well, taking fifth place with a total of 364. Waterville won with a 331 ahead of Skaneateles (348), Marcellus (349) and General Brown (364).
Moesch proved one of the top individuals in the field at Barker Brook, shooting an eight-over-par 80 to tie Waterville’s Gavin Poyer for fifth place.
Marcellus senior Shawn Colella, who is going to Binghamton University, took individual honors with a 72, four shots ahead of Waterville’s Gabe Williams. Tyan Jones (Skaneateles) was third with a 78 and Johnny Gruninger (Manlius-Pebble Hill) was fourth with a 79.
When the girls sectional Division II tournament took place a day later at Kanon Valley, a two-hour tain delay meant the event was shortened to nine holes.
That didn’t keep Lakers junior Sophia Clancy from posting her own top-10 finish, Clancy shooting a 50 to tie Sherburne-Earlville’s Maleah Britton for seventh place overall as Westhill’s Catherine Dadey took top honors with a 40.
Ninth-grader Grace Probe also represented Cazenovia at the sectional tournament, shooting a 60 to tie for 24th place, one shot ahead of the 61 from Chittenango’s lone representative, Delaney Dawkins, while two other Lakers took part as Claire Marris had a 63 and Natalie Dolan a 71.
