ONONDAGA COUNTY – The Marcellus boys golf team nearly saw its quest for another undefeated regular season nearly derailed by Manlius-Pebble Hill on May 27, but the Mustangs did enough to beat the Trojans 205-208.
Shawn Colella shot a 35 at Tecumseh Golf Club, behind the 33 from MPH star Johnny Gruninger, but Will Glass posted a 37 and John White had a 38 ahead of the 40s by Trojans teammates Jack Marquardt and Tommy Wildhack.
It was more lopsided last Tuesday when Marcellus ripped Pulaski 193-287 at Sunset Ridge, where the Mustangs completed an 8-0 season and ran its win streak to 54 consecutive matches.
Having not dropped a match since May 2015 (when it lost to Westhill), Marcellus was again led by Colella, whose 34 capped a five-season high-school career where, since seventh grade, Colella never lost a single team match. A senior, Colella will play golf next year at Binghamton University.
White finished second among Marcellus golfers, shooting a 37, with Glass adding a 39.
Meanwhile, three area high school girls golf teams would make their way to Woodcrest last Thursday to take part in the Onondaga High School League championship tournament.
Of them, Marcellus did best, rising to second place with a team score of 440, edging Westhill, who was third with 446. Skaneateles got fourth place with 469 as they all chased Christian Brothers Academy, who won with 412.
Individually, the Mustangs and Warriors shared third place thanks to Bronte Stahl and Catherine Dadey each posting 18-hole totals of 99, which only trailed Bishop Grimes’ Sarah Falgiatano (95) and CBA’s Annie Kilmartin (98). The Lakers’ Julia Marshall tied for sixth with a 105 and Westhill’s Maya Wollen tied for ninth with 110.
As for West Genesee, it goes to the sectional tournament at Kanon Valley after some late-season success, including its 219-248 victory over Cicero-North Syracuse Green on May 27.
Maria Bove and Sophia Simiele set the pace for the Wildcats, each shooting 51 at Westvale, while Leah Corcoran finished with a 55 to take third place among individuals.
WG then took a close 218-219 defeat to Fayetteville-Manlius White last Tuesday at Green Lakes. Bove’s 49 was the low individula round, with Simiele getting a 53 and Corcoran a 58 as Amelia Lopez finished with a 59.
