CAZENOVIA – With its first victory in the books, the Cazenovia boys lacrosse team now wanted more -and didn’t waste much time finding it against one of its neighbors.
The Lakers dominated last Tuesday’s game against Chittenango, prevailing 12-5 as part of a boys-girls sweep by Cazenovia over both sets of Bears.
In the boys game at the Sean Googin Sports Complex, Chittenango got the jump, earning a 3-2 lead through one period, but Cazenovia fought its way in front 6-5 by halftime.
Then the Bears were kept off the board in the entire second half as the Lakers’ defense proved superb, Chris Vecchiarelli eventually earning nine saves.
Though Chittenango goalie Dan Ensinger had 11 saves, he couldn’t keep Brody Coleman from piling up three goals and four assists to serve as the focal point of the Cazenovia attack.
Cody Dickinson scored four times, with Gannon Houghton nad Gavin Winn each scoring twice. Houghton added a pair of assists as Max Michael got the other goal and Jack Wright earned an assist.
In defeat, the Bears had Caleb Barnard and Bradley Tilly both score twice, with Barnard adding two assists. Jack Lamphere and Brandon Barnard had the other goals.
As this went on, the girls game took place at Chittenango, where Cazenovia gained a far more lopsided result, netting 11 unanswered goals in the first half on the way to defeating the Bears 16-3.
Again leading the Lakers’ charge, Katie Rajkowski netted five goals and added a trio of assists, with Carley Lounsbury scoring three times for a hat trick.
Megan Kuhn, Hadley Schug and Riley Knapp had two goals apiece, while Lily Sorbello earned a goal and two assists and Dali Denison also contributed a goal.
On Chittenango’s side, Juila Graham had two goals and Cara Kielbasa earned the other tally, with Abby Penfield and Emma Powers combining to make 16 saves.
Moving on from these games, the Cazenovia boys made it three wins in a row last Thursday as it handled Marcellus 16-8, deciding matters early by blazing out to an 11-2 halftime advantage.
James LaFever had a star turn for the Lakers, scoring five times to match Coleman, who also got a pair of assists. Dickinson had three goals and two assists, with Houghton adding two goals and two assists as Wright got one goal and two assists. Chris Vecchiarelli stopped 11 of the Mustangs’ 19 shots.
Then, hosting 6-2 Watertown on Saturday, the Lakers erased an early 5-3 deficit by halftime,and gradually asserted itself the rest of the way, eventually earning an 18-12 victory over the Cyclones.
Coleman, with his career-best seven assists, constantly fed it to Dickinson and Houghton, who each got six goals and one assist. Wright scored twice to match Coleman as Forrest Ives had one goal and one assist. Wyatt Hartley also scored.
Cazenovia’s girls won Thursday over Whitesboro 14-8, led again by Rajkowski, who got five goals and one assist. Sorbello had three goals as Schug and Lounsbury found the net twice. Julia Ketcham had a goal and three assists and Knapp put up a goal and two assists.
In Saturday’s game at Homer, those same Lakers lost 16-5. All five goals came from Rajkowski as the Trojans were led by Kloey Roos (four goals, three assists) and Camryn Calabro (three goals, three assits).
