CENTRAL NEW YORK – Inactive for most of the week, the Cazenovia boys tennis was able to get back on the court for last Friday’s match against LaFayette, where it swept past the Lancers 5-0.
Traian Cherciu was dominant in first singles for the Lakers, blanking Luke Wanlass 6-0, 6-0, while Aiden Kalteski got past Mason Shute 6-1, 6-2 and Jake Wardel earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Brandon Benjamin.
Moving to doubles, Andrew Falso and Carter Ruddy put together their own 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Lindsay Carroll and Hunter Martorella, with Tristan Alvisi and Garret Lounsbury topping Paul Coon and Mark Humphrey 6-4, 6-1.
Cazenovia’s match with Marcellus, rained out last Wednesday, will get made up May 20, and the Lakers hope to meet Chittenango late this week.
When the Bears opened its season against Homer last Monday afternoon, it succeeded in doubles, but still lost 3-2 to the Trojans.
Luke Dahlin and Artie Paul gave the Bears one doubles point when they defeated Nik Kruman and Conor Powers 6-2, 6-2, while Andrew Graf and Jacob Podunajec earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Brandon McLaughlin and Eljiah Smith.
Up in singles, Evan Edwards fell to Spencer Rusyniak 6-3, 6-1, while Josh Boulter lost to Raymond Meing 6-0, 6-2. In a closer battle, Micah Alperuto took a 6-4, 6-4 defeat to Jake Camp.
Chittenango did better against Phoenix on Thursday afternoon, prevailing 4-1 as it claimed both doubles points. Graf and Podunajec gained a forfeit, but Dahlin and Paul played, handling Liam Campanino and Cayden McKay 6-0, 6-2.
In the singles matches, Alperuto also claimed a forfeit. Smith lost a 6-4, 0-6, 10-7 decision to Alex Olschewske, but Boulter countered with a 6-0, 6-1 romp over Liam Sweeney.
Then, on Friday, Chittenango lost 3-2 to Onondaga-Westhill, with Dahlin and Paul winning an 8-1 doubles match over Harshdeep Banga and Sophia Featherstone as Edwards and Smith paired up to top Angelo Carr and Nate Hay 6-4, 6-4. But the Bears saw Graf, Alperuto and Boulter each lose their singles matches in two sets.
