ONONDAGA COUNTY – Four area high school girls golf teams had not seen any sort of competition since May 2019, so 23 months passed before they all took to the course again.
When they did, the results varied, but the joy of having competition again after the lost 2020 season made up for any concerns about scores.
West Genesee was the first to compete on April 23, traveling to Hickory Hills where it took a 158-213 defeat to the Liverpool Warriors.
Maria Bove shot a 47 for nine holes, leading the Wildcats. Sophia Simele had a 51 ahead of Lizzy Sachar (57) and Leah Corelran (59) as Liverpool got a 33 from Mia Avotins and a 36 from Nataly Avotins.
Westhill and Marcellus both got underway last Monday, with the Warriors successful in its season debut by defeating the Cazenovia Lakers 227-265.
At Camillus Golf Club, Catherine Dadey set the pace for the Warriors, shooting a 49. Sophie Clancy finished with a 57, followed by a 58 from Jules Bleskoski and 60s from Maya Wollen and Bella Jones.
As for Marcellus, whose home matches are at Tuscraora Golf Club, it beat Chittenango 247-273 last Monday in similar chilly conditions.
Bronte Stahl, fresh off leading the girls volleyball Mustangs to a perfect 10-0 record, shot 60, as did Colleen Marsh, while Isabella Formoza added a 63. Miranda Stewart and Claire Curtin had matching rounds of 64.
Marcellus made it back-to-back wins when it edged Bishop Grimes 244-252 at Tuscarora. Stahl’s 55 trailed the 49 from the Cobras’ Sarah Falgiatano, but no other Grimes player shot lower than 68, which Marsh (62), Stewart (63) and Genevieve Formoza (64) all did.
Skaneateles was not as successful in its opener against visiting Christian Brothers Academy, taking a 217-248 defeat as Annie Kilmartin led the Brothers shooting a 49 at Skaneateles Country Club.
