CAMILLUS – Having sat through the spring of 2020 waiting out a burgeoning pandemic, the Liverpool track and field team was quite eager to resume its championship push a year later.
For its opening meet of 2021, the Warriors traveled to West Genesee, where it dominated the girls meet 105-30 and won a closer boys meet over the Wildcats 75.5-62.5.
Sophia Jarosz led Liverpool’s girls, sweeping through sprints as she took the 100-meter dash in 13.4 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 27.8 seconds, while Kaitlyn Burt took the 100 hurdles in 17.7 seconds and the 400 hurdles in 1:15.7.
Sydney Carlson, one of the Warriors’ top returning distance runners, claimed first in the 800-meter run in 2:23.7 and the 1,500-meter run in 5:12.3 as Gabby McCarthy went 11:21.9 in the 3,000-meter run.
Sophia Recuparo, who had just finished her season as the top diver on Liverpool’s girls swim team, moved to track and won the high jump, clearing 5 feet 4 inches as Allison Daoust went 12’11” in the long jump and Tessa Gullo had a first-place triple jump of 25’8 1/2”. Eva Woodworth took the 400-meter dash in 1;02.8.
Liverpool’s boys team relied on its distance runners, especially Ryan Hagan, who managed to sweep all three of the longest races on the card.
In the 800, Hagan finished in a quick 2:01.5, adding a 1,600-meter title in 4:36.2 and, in the 3,200-meter run, beating the field with his time of 10:21.2.
As if that wasn’t enough, Hagan joined Jack Sherlock, Jonathan Howland and Jacob Makhlouf to help the Warriors take the 4×800 relay in 8:46.6.
Elsewhere, Noah Smith threw the discus 71’11” and the shot put 32’4 3/4” to win both events, while Bennett Robb cleared 5’10” in the high jump. Jeff Sydney went 1:13.4 to finish first in the 400 hurdles.
Cicero-North Syracuse, who had its opening meet with Corcoran canceled, will be at Liverpool this week in a non-scoring situation as the Warriors face Henninger, the Northstars not going head-to-head until a May 12 showdown with Fayetteville-Manlius.
