All through the school break leading up to Easter, area high school girls volleyball teams got in a series of matches.
That included reigning two-time state Class B champion Westhill, who rolled through last Tuesday’s match against Cazenovia, sweeping the Lakers 25-10, 25-13, 25-6.
Morgan Richardson set the tone with a career-best 11 aces. Kate Heinrich added four aces as she got 12 kills and Katie Culligan had seven kills, with Tori Militi producing 17 digs and Hannah Schmitz earning 26 assists.
Extending its win streak to 44 straight matches, Westhill beat Christian Brothers Academy 25-14, 25-13, 22-25, 25-9, with Heinrich getting 14 kills and Schmitz earning 25 assists. Richardson had five kills and Militi got five aces, one more than Richardson, Heinrich and Schmitz.
Matching Westhill win for win in advance of a Monday-night showdown with the Warriors, Marcellus made it four in a row last Thursday in its own match against Cazenovia, taking the first and third sets 25-15 and handing the Lakers 25-17 in the second set.
Bronte Stahl, with nine kills and 12 digs, paced the Mustangs, with Brook Finarty adding six kills and six digs. Jenna Mattison managed 22 assists and also got six digs, with Elaine Grattan and Sarah Louer each earning eight digs. Mattison and Louer both had four aces.
This followed a 25-22, 25-17, 25-11 sweep of Homer two days earlier. Finnarty gained 10 kills, with Stahl adding five kills and seven digs. Louer had 12 digs and Grattan got 11 digs as Mattison contributed 17 assists.
Solvay improved to 3-0 last Tuesday by sweeping Institute of Technology Central 25-8, 25-13, 25-15, with Alicia Granger getting 10 aces, Olivia Petralito seven aces and Emily Garnett six aces. Margaret Kemp had nine kills and Ryleigh Bidwell had six kills as Antoinette Sardo got 10 assists and Brayla Bagozzi had six assists.
Then the Bearcats beat Bishop Ludden on Thursday night, running through the Gaelic Knights in the first and third sets by equal 25-8 margins with a 25-22 second set in between.
Myah Platler’s eight aces set the tone as Bagozzi got five aces to go with 11 assists. Toni Sardo added six assists as Granger earned six kills and Petralito added seven digs. Ludden got five kills from Rachel Sherwood and 10 assists from Kate Ruddy, who added five digs.
Before this, Ludden won 25-20, 25-20, 26-24 over Manlius-Pebble Hill last Tuesday night, seeing Ruddy gain 14 assists, five kills, five aces and six digs.
Sherwood added five aces, with Allison Bradley getting five kills and Paige Smith matching Sherwood’s total of four kills. Sarah Fink had four aces.
