ONONDAGA COUNTY – The West Genesee girls volleyball team played twice in a 48-hour span and lost to a pair of league rivals.
It started when the Wildcats took on Fayetteville-Manlius last Tuesday and won the first set 25-20. After dropping the next two sets 25-20 and 25-17, the Wildcats had several chances to force a fifth set, but the Hornets claimed the fourth 30-28.
Olivia Snyder finished with 25 assists as Izzy Allen got eight kills and Phoebe Anderson added six kills, plus six digs. Mia Lamanna also had six kills. Cameron Rosenthal earned 11 digs and four kills. Cami Zajac had nine digs and three kills.
In last Thursday’s match against Cicero-North Syracuse, WG was close in each of the first two sets but lost them 25-20 and 25-23, recovering to win the third set 25-21 but seeing the Northstars clinch the match 25-19 in the fourth set.
Allen had 16 kills and 12 digs, with Zajac and Anderson each earning five kills. Snyder, in addition to her 32 assists, amassed 19 digs as Rosenthal got 17 digs. Lamanna managed 11 digs, four kills and six blocks.
Jordan-Elbridge won its third straight match 25-5, 25-10, 25-11 over Hannibal, with Sarah Lane earning nine aces and Paige Lane getting six aces as Montana Sheriff had four aces. Gabby Smart got three kills as she, along with Abby Ahern and Ava Hildebrandt, had three aces apiece.
Then, against Mexico on Thursday, the Eagles made quite a comeback, dropping the first two sets 25-18 and 25-23, only to turn around and win the next three sets over the Tigers 25-16, 25-23 and 25-21.
Smart and Paige Lane had seven kills apiece, Lane adding nine digs and nine aces. Ahern added four aces as Sarah Lane got 12 assists and five digs, with Elizabeth Bartoszewski earning 11 digs.
J-E went for five in a row Friday, against Pulaski, and got it, sweeping the Blue Devils as Smart gained seven kills and Paige Lane added five kills. Sarah Lane got eight assists and Hildebrant finished with five assists, plus three aces.
Skaneateles was 0-2 before getting its first win of the season last Tuesday against Christian Brothers Academy, surviving a series of close sets to outlast the Brothers 29-27, 25-21, 27-29, 25-22.
Rory Comer had 23 assists, four aces and eight digs. Emma Miller picked up eight aces and 16 digs and Alex Csemez added 11 digs to go with seven kills. Gracecyn Congel notched seven aces and five kills, Stella Zang adding six kills as Ashlen Rossi contributed six digs.
A day later, the Lakers lost to Homer 25-19, 25-17, 25-21. Erin Guthrie led with six kills, Congel adding five kills as Comer amassed 16 assists, four kills and seven digs. Miller amassed 13 digs and Csemez added nine digs.
