In order for the West Genesee girls tennis team to complete its 2020 season, the weather would need to cooperate at least some of the time.
Matches against two of the Wildcats’ SCAC Metro division foes – Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse – still remained after various rainouts, but two others were played late in the week, each of them defeats.
WG was able to go indoors to Pine Grove for last Tuesday’s non-league match against East Syracuse Minoa, where it prevailed 6-1 over the Spartans.
Pairing up once more, Angelina Llanos and Katie Viau ripped Alana Day and Katie Schmidt 6-0, 6-0, with two other points gained in single-set matches.
Kayla Latone and Isabelle Wells won 10-5 over Rhiannon Axtman and Tierrah Bauer. Ava Amodio and Elianna Cui lost to Angelina Baxter and Neveah Harris 10-6, but Sarah Bacon and Annalyse Kittell handled Savana Caron and Hannah Neish 10-2.
Angelina Allen won a single-set match, topping Bella Sylvester 10-7, while Alyssa Congel handled Caitlin Abbott 6-1, 6-0 and Margaret Mello routed Lizzy Phillips 6-1, 6-1.
The weather cleared up on Friday so that WG could face Baldwinsville, and here the Wildcats had success in doubles, but still lost to the Bees 5-2.
Llanos and Viau fell behind Audrey Benton and Paige Tromblee, but still won 4-6, 6-0, 6-1, and the same thing happened with Congel and Mello, who came back for a 3-6, 6-1, 10-4 win over Reagan Doan and Ella Tromblee.
However, the Wildcats did not earn a game in any of the three singles matches, while in doubles Latone and Wells lost to Ayla Kalfass and Julia Quinn 6-3, 6-3, with Allen and Cui falling to Jessica Bilynsky and Madelyn Krahl 6-4, 6-3.
Then it was Saturday’s showdown between WG and undefeated Fayetteville-Manlius, who stayed that way by turning back the Wildcats’ challenge in another 5-2 decision.
Llanos went to singles and shut out Trisha Adavikolanu 6-0, 6-0, while Viau led early against F-M’s Anna Manta, but could not hold on to it in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 defeat.
WG’s doubles point came from a three-set battle where Congel and Mello beat Samhitha Adavikolanu and Emma Zogg 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Latone and Wells lost to Alexis Ahn and Angela Iskander 6-0, 6-4.
Jordan-Elbridge finally returned to action last Wednesday, against Bishop Grimes, and the Eagles nearly got into the win column before falling to the Cobras 4-3.
Gabrielle Skotinski and Jillian Ferris both lost in singles, but Briana Becker gained a point with a 10-4 victory over Anna Fritz.
Winning twice in doubles, J-E had Lexi Delfavero and Ireland Hill blank Lexi Emmi and Alicia Kelley 10-0, while Leah Dixon and Jordan Macbeth got their own 10-0 win over Ashlee Brinson and Marin DeTullo.
In the other doubles matches, Laura Alcock and Laney Green got close, but lost to Eleanor DeChick and Leah Perry 10-7. Mia Disinger and Hannah Power had a 10-3 loss to Julia Avery and Deddeh Fasama.
