With warm temperatures gone and an autumn chill setting in, it was time for the Cazenovia boys golf team to undergo one more stern test.
Three top sides – Cazenovia, Westhill and Skaneateles – would face each other last Saturday at Skaneateles Country Club, and the visiting Lakers emerged with a split.
Going into the match with an 8-1 record, Cazenovia shot 222 for the afternoon, but that trailed the 217 from Westhill and the 215 that host Skaneateles shot to finish on top.
Alex Moesch shot a nine-hole score of 39, behind the 35 from Westhill’s Anthony Maglisco and 37 from Skaneateles’ Tynan Jones, while two of Jones’ teammates, Tyson DiRubbo and Shawn Luce, got 43 and 44, respectively.
That was too much to overcome, though Chris Kelly posted a 45 to match Skaneateles’ Drew Henderson. Close behind them, Jack Byrnes, Cody Dickinson and Liam Colligan each shot 46 as Ben Orbach got a 52.
Meanwhile, any chance that the Cazenovia field hockey team had to establish some continuity and rhythm had long disappeared by the time it reached the final week of October.
A string of postponements and cancellations, due to COVID-19 (Cato-Meridian) and otherwise (one game with Fayetteville-Manlius was taken off the schedule), left the Lakers idle for long stretches.
By the time Cazenovia took on Canastota last Saturday afternoon, it had not played in a week, and once again the offense struggled to find its rhythm during a 1-0 defeat to the Raiders.
For the 60 minutes, the Lakers managed just two shots on net. Canastota had a few more opportunities, and overcame Mackenzie Halliday’s four saves by having Jessica Evans put in the game’s lone goal.
This Friday, Cazenovia hopes to make up its rained-out game last Tuesday at Weedsport, this following a Monday rematch with Canastota and a Thursday game against Homer.
